The first time I played flatwounds on a bass was also the last time I played flatwounds on a bass. I was bleeding. Maybe they've improved but I'll never find out.

Must have been super light gauge. I run Fender 9050MLs. It's like playing piano wire. I'm pretty sure Fender still makes them like the old fashioned one's for the most part. Different strokes for different folks. As long as you're playing it's all good! :D

I have flats on my bass too. I pick that instrument up at least once in six months: everytime I do I have blisters on the ends of my fingers in about 45 minutes flat. Mind you, that would probably be true whatever the strings were.

No kidding.

It´s a Source...
But thank God i have restrained myself several times from purchasing
a fancy Theorbo, which is a kind of Lute, sure to get some beautiful girl´s attention.

Completely seriously, that's totally to be encouraged. The good news is that with this surprising new popularity "early music" is getting the price of beginner grade lutes has dropped amazingly, and they can be had nowadays for around the price of a mid-market Strat (they used to have to be custom built at a cost of thousands).

To be fair, theorbos are still a lot more - so get started with a nice seven course lute and see where it takes you. Lutes rock! :D

Apologies for the thread hijack - but the cause is a good one.

Cheers - C

Long time ago I had fender Flatwounds on a Jazz, after a few months the tape either loosended or seperated and the edges were sharp. That was th last time I used Fender bass strings. Over the years, I've never had any problems, just that one time.

Those are Fender Tapewounds. Not Flatwounds. For Tapes I'd recommend the Roto-sounds like McCartney uses. They are tape over flats. The Fenders are Tape over Roundwound steel which is why they tend to shred.

I see I'm not the only one who sometimes has issues on this board with the apostrophe. It seems to be working fine right now but sometimes acts up as seen in Ceri's quote of mike07502 where it substitutes a different form of apostrophe. I also have issues sometimes with quotation marks and question marks. Typically the question mark shows up as this symbol (imported from the character map) È.

Sorry, i meant to say they seperated, they weren't tapewounds. Must have been defective. I've tried flats a few times but keep going back to round wound.

(Another hijack - sorry!)

Ah-ha. I have no idea of the technical reason behind it, but I do a bit of basic webpage building now and again and have noticed weird problems with apostrophes. For instance, if I cut and paste from Word into a page of HTML apostrophes often but not always malfunction and display as wingdings - squares or similar. If I retype the apostrophe using the HTML editor's own mark then they display OK.

I don't have the knowledge to explain it, but I have a feeling it is to do with the way individual browsers and/or computers interpret code. Evidence for this is that your location line, BMW-KTM, displays the way you intend as upside-down text on one of my computers but as meaningless wingdingy gobbledygook on another.

For the little it's worth my and mike07502's posts are displaying with the apostrophes correct on my screen - go figure!

Back to the thread - C

PS: endless typos - those are all my own doing. 8)

OK, so you're not seeing this as any different from normal, then?

Here´s a link to a little something from those days gone by.
...

I see my apostrophe as standing up and using very little space horizontally.
I see mike's as being quite slanted and using up the same room as a w or an m.

 Gee, I hadn´t noticed about my apostrophies, and here it is again... Ain´t that wierd now, my apostrophee has a detaché quality to it, just like a badly performed trill. This won´t help my obsessive compulsive disorder! I feel it coming now.
So 7 string renaissance Lute eh, Ceri? Will ponder.
Cheers guys.

Here's completely subjective answer: A much wiser (and better) musician that I am once said, "There are only 2 types of music: GOOD music and BAD music." I only pay for GOOD music.

Wow, that's crazy. I've never heard of that unless a string was cut too short. (ie: trying to get full scale strings on a medium or shortscale bass, ect)

I don't blame you for not going back. Fluke or not, bass strings are pricey and if I had an experience like that I wouldn't purchase them again, either.

Recently; I purchased:
Joe Walsh - Analog Man
Joe Bonamassa - Driving Toward The Daylight (excellent CD)

I prefer to go to live performances as much as possible, but cost and life prevent that from happening as much as I'd like. I certainly wouldn't pass up an artists concert just because I had bought their CD.

I recently bought the new Mike Eldred Trio to add to my collection:

http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss? ... ldred+Trio

I mostly like funk, soul, r&b, jazz and reggae but have also
bought rock, blues, indie, ambient, pop and some country stuff too.

I purchase all of my music (except two tracks I couldn't find elsewhere)

Just recently bought mp3 albums that were just too good to pass up:

Rancho Texicano: The Best of ZZ Top -- 38 tracks for $2.99
Bruce Springsteen Greatest Hits -- 18 tracks for $2.99
Loss Opportunity: The 2012 Sub Pop Records Sampler -- I like a lot of the Sub Pop bands; 20 tracks for FREE.

This is unusual for me. I look for new music not music from the past but these were "no brainers". Looking forward to the new Tame Impala album in October.

I still pay for all my music. It's only on really rare occasions that I don't, and that's usually when the band is giving it away for free.
