What is up with Noises?

And just to answer the question of why if you fret a string halfway the pitch doubles, it's because for a wave on a string (and many other types of waves)

velocity = frequency x wavelength => frequency = velocity / wavelength.

Now, if you fret the string at the halfway point, you are cutting the wavelength in half. So now you have

velocity = frequency x (1/2) wavelength,

and once again solving this for frequency by cross-multiplying gives

frequency = 2 x velocity / wavelength.

Thus you have doubled your frequency.

Of course that holds for anywhere you fret the string, the pitch will change proportionally.
