I'm curious, what do you suppose are the best, space-saving components for wiring up a pedal board? I refuse to use solderless cables and I don't necessarily always want 6" cables between everything.

Mogami cable seems really nice, but what about the plugs? Thanks in advance!

Wow!

Thanks for the kind words everyone! This thread has gone down far better than I expected! :D

Holy Crap! 50 points for me! Yeah! Cheers Mike! Nice looking bunch of cable you have there buddy.

Are they the solder-less type?

That's the spirit. Get stuck in and let us know how you get on!

I make computer cables and that's way harder, this should be easy and save me a ton of money (I have lots of 'bad' cables, I bet snipping off the jacks and starting over would bring them back to life). :D

Nice! You'll have no problems with this then! May be worth checking the jack connections before you snip then off. Might just need re-soldering.

I've bought a big bag of angled jack connectors.

Superb. ...Where, please?

Yo Ceri!

I got them form Bitsbox.co.uk

Just to be clear, the jack connectors in the bag are a different type to the one used in my first post which I picked up off Ebay. The type in the bag might be of interest to Toronado...

Toronado wrote:

...So I think we'll have a closer look at 'um. :D

Image

They are flat back angle jack connectors and are great for saving space on your pedal board. The do however, have slightly different internals...

Image

The grey disk acts as a barrier to stop the hot wire grounding out against the back of the casing once you put it all together.

A little change in where to solder the cable in too...

Image

I've used a piece of heat-shrink tubing to ensure that the hot wire and the ground never come into contact.

I've used them to made a few little cables now and they work a treat!

Image

And with a little help from a cable tie...

Image

...You can get your pedals nice a close together...

Image

Might not be good for those of you who are gigging regularly and like a bit of space between your pedals but I'm a home studio player and space in my man cave is tight.

Worth mentioning at this point, the reason I have two types of angled jack is because some Boss pedals, in this case my NS-2 Noise Suppressor, have the jack sockets a tad too close to use the flat jacks...

Image

Not a problem with the other type...

Image

Hope that helps...

What is that fascinating looking beer, if you'd be so kind? Baltika?

Its a Russian beer. come to think of it, I don't think I've had Russian beer before. It's 5.5%, quite tasty, very easy to drink. Not bad, not bad at all! :D

Good Lord, a useful thread about guitar related stuff on a guitar forum. When did that last happen? Wonders will never cease! Thanks, man.

Bit of a Shocker ain't it!

Distinct lack of cat though...

Sorted!

Randel the Cat say "Hi" to all who hang out in Fender Forum-land! :D

Enjoy!

Andy, much heartfelt kudos to you mate.
You've seen a little covered area and explained it most perfectly.

I remember as a kid, always skint. ALWAYS MESSY ALWAYS BREAKING CABLES, I had to learn this stuff the hard way. Resulting in much burnt fingers and a seriously scorched bedroom carpet.
No need for anyone to through that nonsense with this thread around. 8)

Oh one of mine (for a mission so secret even Her Maj parachuting in wouldn't get me to spill the beans).

Great post Andy
I used to do that WAY back, but found your post both informative and jokey enough to make it really interesting
A friend of mine used to make his own guitar cables way back in the sixties , but being a cheapskate , he used to buy tv aerial wire ( similar to guitar cable, in that it's co-ax, but way cheaper and stiffer )

We went to see him playing with his band one night and he'd left his guitar propped up on his amp with the volume knob turned down at the end of the first set
As the band started the second set, he was seen frantically trying to stop the radio calls from the local taxi firm coming over his amp (The guitar had acted like a Giant aeriel and was picking up signals)

Thanks mate! :D

50 points for a fine display of DIY cable-age! I've got to ask, is it for recording direct to your PC/laptop? Perhaps some home made Ninja Tunes on the way?

Good to see you post. Hope the band thang is going well.

Hehehe!

I bet that could make for some interesting live performances!

Thanks again chaps!

Ah-ha! Didn't know that website before. Some things much cheaper than Maplin - neat. Thanks very much! :D

Love the cable tie idea, BTW. Never thought of that: I like it!

Yep, although I have soldered many, those are George L's.

Nope mate. No home recording round these parts. I'm far too Luddite to get involved with plugging a guitar into anything other than an amp or distortion pedal.
It's a way better thing than that, and even guitar related to boot.

Band, yep, things are ..... :?
Great band, problematic members leading to booking problems. Very tiresome. Though I'm about to execute a plan of extreme kindness to someone who's throat I wanted to tear out. That should bring any problems to a head, or completely nullify them.
Life can get interesting when you use kindness as a weapon.

On the recording note, I'm back in the studio Saturday for another four songs. Four barre chords and lots of swear words. You couldn't call it music when compared to compositions of the ilk you knock out.
I used to be quite leery of recording. I always felt like I was under the microscope and when it's done thats it. You can't go back and change it once the song was released.
Then I grew up a bit. I decided to put myself under the microscope well before I ever got to the studio.

Here's one from the last session (bah that Euro nonsense was only a warm up for the world cup anyway). Bet non of you can guess the guitar and amp used.

Now I'm back to watching the ladies gymnastics.

I really like the low-profile heads on George L's. How do you find those cables, Mike?

Spirit of 66, cracking tune. I have absolutely no idea what guitar or amp it is, but there's some proper tasty lead chops going on in there, mate!

I know what you mean about recording, but for me its it's a must as I really can't be doing with all that band bollox. Faceless Solo Instrumentalists get all the girls anyway, right?

Cheers!

You can keep em, the missus would kill me if she got wind of me surrounded by other examples of the female species.

Guitar is a clean Telecaster, coupled with a dirty les paul. Both guitars into a Vibrochamp XD. Excellent recording amp! Plug in, turn up, away you go!

I'm genuinely starting to enjoy recording a bit more. It's easy, just let the engineer do the leg work whilst I hit a few chords.

Now that is fantastic! I could do with botching together something like that, it'd be much better than using the adaptor as they're a bit bulky and can wreak havoc with putting pressure on a laptop line in socket.

I mean a good mic would be even better for me but why would I want to do that when I could crack open a cold one and get messy with a soldering iron!

Must get you round to test it out once its ready.

Cheers!
