Watch the awesome "Comfortably Numb" video from the PULSE concert. At 1:23-1:27 in the beginning of the video, it looks like David Gilmour has a pedal of some sort mounted on his mic stand.

It was awesome and the video quality was great! Loved the closeups of gilmours playing the neck etc..Im new to the electric guitar thing so no clue on the box..good close up of it at about 121 if that helps anyone...but a more important question what on earth was the guitar without the headstock????

The headless guitar is a Steinberger bass, played by Guy Pratt (who is the nephew of Pink Floyd keyboardist Richard Wright).

I say it for his control for his monitors or control over some of his pedal board like his Doppola (rotary speaker) cabinets or delay times

Well it's not an ashtray.

Looks like his mic is plugged into and out of it. The box is powered too, as you can see a power cord.

A pre-amp of some sort??? :?

According to the Gilmourish web site, Mic stand with monitor mixer and a Heil Talk Box.

That little box is what we in the music business call "a piece of Dave's gear". Like all pieces of Dave's gear it's intended purpose remains a mystery. I believe it is very likely a remote control for poking Roger Waters quite firmly in the ribs, much like a voodoo doll. Thus as Roger slumps over in pain while Dave's guitar solo soars in ever-upward swirling spirals toward heaven, Roger is quite justified in saying,

wait for it .....

.

"I detect the hand of David Gilmour in this..."

(those who get my reference will find this amusing)

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Hey guys: I had the pleasure to go to the very show at Earls Court in London which the BBC filmed and which became the Pulse video. I have studied the footage carefully and absolutely failed to find myself in the crowd - but I must be out there somewhere!

If I remember rightly Dave used the Heil Talk Box on Keep Talking:

Image

So if we take a look at that number on the vid -

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r-XtvR6-ckg

- I believe we can see (good shot at 3.02, and he's using the box from about 4.28 on) that the tube for the Talk Box is running into a unit on the ground, shown bottom left in this pic of Dave's Division Bell tour stage rig:

Image

Therefore, the knobbed gizmo fixed to his mic stand around waist height must be the monitor controls mentioned on Gilmourish.com.

That's my take on it, anyhow.

BTW: nobody has ever put on a live show like the Floyd. We shall never see anything quite like it again.

Cheers - C

EDIT: typos. Sigh.

Though I think this theory has a lot going for it too:

Well, my brother was really the Floyd fan rather than me; he was going and I said I'd tag along. Glad I did because it was their last tour, and everyone needs to have seen Pink Floyd once in their life.

If memory serves they played Earls Court, a large indoor arena in West London, a record breaking 14 nights in a row. I don't recall which show we were there but my brother said it was the one they filmed, and I do remember TV cameras flying around over our heads which I guess weren't there every night. And the set list is the one we saw: I like the fact that even with their massive show they could play a substantially different set each day. Like a proper band.

The film was screened on TV by the BBC and only later was turned into a commercial video release. Remastered first by Gilmour, I think.

We were sitting on the banked seating stage right, about 50-ish places from the front. Light shows are not really my thing but if you were going to see just one - that was it! It looks pretty good on the vid, but it was absolutely amazing right there in the room!

Quite special.

Cheers - C
