Vulpinity, It sounds like it might be some fun, what kit would you recommend?

Hello,
I have been searching for a good fuzz pedal and was wondering if anyone had some input. I was looking at the Earthquaker Devices Dream Crusher, Z. Vex Fuzz Factory, Keeley Fuzz Head and some others. Anyways, I like that Dan Auerbach fuzz tone, warm and fuzzy and kind of muddy. Some songs that you can hear the tone on are:The Black Keys "Till I Get My Way", The Black Keys "Here I am I always Am", The White Stripes "Dead Leaves on The Dirty Ground", and The Black Angels "Black Grease". I would kind of like a fuzz pedal that could kind of double as an overdrive also. I currently have an American Special HSS Strat and a Peavey Delta Blues 210.

I guess everyone's pedalboard changes over time. Here's what I dug up . . .

Dan Auerbach - Russian Big Muff, Shin-Ei Nu-Wa Fuzz and a Companion Fuzz. Both the Nu-Wa and Companion use the same circuit that became most popular as the Univox Super Fuzz.

Jack White - E-H Big Muff and sometimes a Z-Vex Wooley Mammoth.

Christian Bland - Fuzz Face, Ibanez Tube Screamer (4 knob model), Russian Big Muff, Death By Audio Interstellar Overdriver

Hmmm, just one pedal in common . . . and I don't even own a Muff.

Mine started out as a kit from http://pigeonfx.com/kits.html - Really nice person to deal with, he accidentally sent me a Tonebender MkII board instead of the Fuzz Face one, I emailed him, and within a couple of days I received not only the correct Fuzz Face board, but a full set of components to build the Tonebender board up as well as an apology.

You'll have to source your own transistors with that kit, but they're easy enough to find - loads of places sell nice germanium matched pairs, or just go nuts, buy a handful, and see what sounds good. :D

Really glad I did it, as I ended up with an absolutely top class fuzz for not much outlay, and learned a lot along the way, which helped me modify the circuit to my own exact tastes which is now pretty much the centre of my entire rig.

So if I were to buy that, would there be a list of additional items I will need, or am I just supposed to know that

In addition to that kit, you would need -

2 x PNP germanium transistors (I used AC128's for my first build)

1 mono 1/4" socket (output jack)

1 stereo 1/4" socket (input jack)

1 9v battery clip

2 pots - 500k and 1k

1 footswitch

Also, some wire, and some sort of box to shove it all in - I used a gutted Behringer tube overdrive which had never worked properly. Note that the above is for a PNP (positive ground) layout, which mostly precludes running the pedal from a power supply - not really a problem, considering the fuzz face uses so little power that a 9v battery can last a small eternity.

There are plenty of complete kits available which include all parts and even a box to put it all in, that one was just the one I used, mostly as it came with the correct NOS components - first attempt sounded a bit odd, then I realised I had connected one wire wrong - Doh! Fixed that, and it was instantly the best fuzz I had ever owned (and I've owned some pretty exotic fuzzes over the years!), the sense of satisfaction was immense.

http://www.geofex.com/article_folders/f ... fffram.htm and http://fuzzcentral.ssguitar.com/fuzzface.php are both incredibly good reads for those building their first fuzz, or even those just curious as to what makes some of these pedals do what they do!

Get a Russian (black) Big Muff Pi. It kicks major $@!. The visual sound angry fuzz is also pretty good and versatile (also includes an octave effect), and the musket fuzz sounds pretty cool too.
