Hello,
I have been searching for a good fuzz pedal and was wondering if anyone had some input. I was looking at the Earthquaker Devices Dream Crusher, Z. Vex Fuzz Factory, Keeley Fuzz Head and some others. Anyways, I like that Dan Auerbach fuzz tone, warm and fuzzy and kind of muddy. Some songs that you can hear the tone on are:The Black Keys "Till I Get My Way", The Black Keys "Here I am I always Am", The White Stripes "Dead Leaves on The Dirty Ground", and The Black Angels "Black Grease". I would kind of like a fuzz pedal that could kind of double as an overdrive also. I currently have an American Special HSS Strat and a Peavey Delta Blues 210.

I have the Z-Vex Fuzz Factory. It's a seriously great pedal with tones you wouldn't believe, BUT it's a touchy thing in that there are many settings that absolutely squeal! and it takes more experimenting with it to get the tones you want. If you just wanted a plug in and get a good sound straight away pedal i wouldn't buy the FF.

When you set it right and are cranked up the tone is like no other distortion unit i've ever tried or heard. The down side is the control fiddling you need to do to get that sound.

RAT is a good pedal, but really is considered distortion, not fuzz. Can't go wrong with a fuzz fzce, but they can be tempermental if not first in your chain. I have an MXR Jimi Hendrix fuzz, I like it a lot, but they don't make them anymore.

my favorite fuzz so far is the DMB Foxy Pirate. it is a really nice fuzz and you can blend in some clean to get some fantastic tones.

and if you want nasty all out fuzz that can work like an overdrive get the Blackout Efectors Musket fuzz

It is a fantastic pedal and very underrated.
one of the best combos I have found is the Pirate run into a lovepedal OD 50.
you get a nice overdrive with a touch of fuzz and it is very creamy with humbuckers

I am pleased with mine.

I had the musket at one time also, very versatile and it can get VERY nasty on the low end if needed. and the focus really tightens up the fuzz to a distortion sound. also the mid control is great to fatten up a single coil. it is definitely a single coil friendly fuzz, really adds some weight to the tone without getting to muddy. i ended up selling it after getting the pirate though. i just had no need for that insane fuzz it did.
oh and on the musket, its NOT battery operated. you need a power supply to use it.

My favourite fuzz pedal is by far the SM Fuzz. It gets some really cool tones IMO.
It's a little more money then other pedals, but I think it's worth it.
Check it out http://www.smfuzz.com/

Blackout Effectors are a good option as well though. I have the Mantra overdrive and it's amazing. They have more then one option for fuzz pedals as well.

I have a Dunlop Jimi Hendrix Fuzzface, and I love it. It sounds dark, heavy, and very psychedelic. However, being a vintage reissue of the original Fuzzface from the '60s, it has some of the original features that are outdated - no DC/AC converter, 9V battery only (but a battery will last forever); also, the input port is on the left and the output port is on the right. But the tone is to die for.

Jack White used a electro harmonix big muff. With the right settings on the pedal and on your amp it sounds eargasmic. And believe me, the sound is BIG.

You could always pick up a soldering iron and make your own - most fuzz circuits are almost laughably simple, and plenty of really good kits available for not much cash at all.

Only fuzz I own now is one I built myself, which started off as a germanium fuzz face clone, and now is some sort of germanium/silicon hybrid...thing.

Absolutely nails the tones I want from a fuzz in a way no off the shelf pedal ever has. Took a while to get it how I truly wanted it though, and much tweaking of components and swearing, but that was half the fun!

Smashing Pumpkins used Big Muff Pi's too. And they are priced reasonably.

Couple of my favorites:

Black Cat Super Fuzz - One of the better Univox Super Fuzz clones out there. Had the real thing decades ago and this is pretty close.

AnalogMan Peppermint Fuzz (Dark) - Designed to give you the sounds of the '60s like the fuzz in the song "Incense and Peppermints", hence the name.
<--------- That's what the standard Peppermint Fuzz looks like.
