Hey all,

So here I am, a poor University student with nothing but his dog and his guitar to keep him company, and with resonator lessons starting this coming Wednesday, I've put some thought into recording.

Not a whole lot, mind you, that's why I'm here ;)

I use a Macbook Pro, and had this idea: Record myself playing the dobro, video and all, and then record myself playing lead, video and all.

Use some application out there to put the two screens together, upload to Youtube, and boom! Instant global feedback. In theory, anyways.

My problem is, I know almost 0 when it comes to that stuff. Do any of you know how I could do this on a Mac, or anything easy (and cheap)?

Thanks!

Well for the video part, you could simply use iMovie. It comes installed with every Mac, and it's fairly simple to figure out. The webcam will not give you the best audio though. I personally have never tried, but I'm sure you could purchase a microphone and connect it to your laptop to optimize the sound quality.
If you care more about audio, then I suggest getting something like the Apogee ONE. It's a simple way to connect your guitar to a Mac, and it is made to work with Garageband. You could then video tape yourself playing to the track you made.

Just a couple ideas though. There are other possible ways to do what you are describing.

Sorry for any spelling/gramar mistakes ... typed this on my phone.

For the use you are describing , you should get a sound card, like the Apogee, + a good microphone. OR - what I think is the cheapest way - you could get an USB microphone. This will serve as both sound card and mic. Try to get one with a connection to headphones, which will ease your monitoring. You could shoot the video w the webcam , or a telephone ( or even a videocamera!! :) )
You can use Quicktime to film , Garageband for sound - getting it all together in iMovie. And you should make search on this forum about the subject ,as there has been questions like this before . 8)

You can also go the route of getting a real cheap 1/4inch to 3.5mm adaptor and plugging your guitar straight in via the line in route and use the garagebands amps and pedals, its actually not as bad as I thought it would be.

He intends to record a resonator ! Acoustic! Doesn't need any quarter inch, then :P
And I suggest NOT to do that cheap trick with that kind of adaptor for anyone trying to record an electric :!: It's got something to do with resistance and output signal. Your guitar is going to sound like a wasp is stuck inside the Mac (or anything you are recording to ) I guess that is short cut to blow the inputs of your computer :( You should at least get something like the iRig. (Though I've never tried that on my Mac...) Then you have got a fair chance to make use of Garageband's amp/pedal-simulations .

I dunno about any problems but I've used it with no problems to my laptop but who knows, its not the best quality but for a rough draft its perfectly usable.

The money was spent wisely even if it made you poor.

One of the forum members has done a few projects as you've described but not sure if he's using a Mac or not. Maybe he will
chime in here :

Apogee has a new input called MIC and is a condenser mic that plugs direct into an Ipod, Ipad or Mac for recording acoustic and vocals. It's supposed to be very high quality with low latency.
If your talking about overlaying two video recordings to look like one, you will need to have the camera in the same stationary position for both recordings and it might look okay.

How are you poor if you own a Mac, possibly the most overpriced/overrated product in history. (right behind The Beatles  )

And it should work with a line in. Just plug your amp's output jack (for headphones) into your mic in jack.
