I remember years ago trying out one of those Fender modeling amps, where you chose a model or mode and, the knobs would turn themselves. I found that not only was it totally high-tech cool but, to myself, it sounded like the best SS modeling amp out there. I have not seen these amps around since.

They are indeed the best and they're still around.

I got mine a year ago and I've seen two more on *bay lately.
They went for 100 bucks more than mine. :D

Fender modeling amps DO model Fender sounds quite excellently! My Mustang III was a hell of a start on a budget! And in response to a previous thread, was MUCH MUCH cheaper than an Egnater (which the 65 watt combo is complete overkill for 90 percent of the gigs you will ever do in your life)! The cyber twin is a very nice amp. It kills when it comes to its Super Reverb, Twin Reverb sounds, etc. I've never been real crazy about Fender's idea of high gain tones tho...usually a straight tube amp (a Fender one, of course....take your pick...any of em will do) with a simple OD pedal (like a Tube Screamer, OCD, or a Plimsoul pedal) in front of it will get you a nice heavy sound with a really nice level of definition to it...you can hear every note in your power chord with none of the shrillness that I found in the modeling amps.

Of course modelling amps made by a particular company model that companies amps better than they model the amps of other companies.
It's a simple marketing strategy. Don't advertise the competition.
Thats why no one makes a modeller that does a good AC30 sound aside from Vox, which does about the best.
Same with Fender and Peavey. They both do excellent jobs of modelling their own amps. In the hope that you'll save up the dough to buy the real thing. Fender would be pretty peeved if you bought their Mustang amp decided that the Marshall sound on it was so good you had to own a 100watt Marshall valve top, wouldn't they.

Blues JNR.......Forget the SS Snobs.....

Go and Park a Frontman next to a Blues Jnr......Play them both, Take your favorite pedal............ It'll be a no brainer....

FWIW, I played a show where the 'house amp' was a Fender Frontman 212R, parked my Fender Mustang III next to it, and everyone wanted to plug into my amp. It was no contest.

Can't say much about the Mustangs haven't played it so much, don't really fancy digital amps... but I have to say that that Frontman 212R is a really... boring amp. Fender tried so hard to make it look and sound like a tube amp and no success I believe. It is a good first amp, and at a school it can take a lot of beating without breaking down too easily... and it is cheap. But so is the Excelsior and it so much more fun to play.

Pardone if this is a repeat, but I was too tired to read all this. Some guys on here have been talking a Super Champ X2 tube amp. I saw one on Musicians Friend for $250. How can you beat that? 6v6 power tubes. :D
