I was a bit touched when John Lennon 'came to live' - and now Queen :!:

The biggest FAIL of all time is that NBC cut The Who, THE BLOODY WHO, from their broadcast here in the states. Someone should lose their job over this.

I'd like to apologise on behalf of Britain for having one direction, the spice girls, take that, and George Michael in the closing ceremony. the who were awesome, they were missing the rolling stones, in my opinion. otherwise i enjoyed the ceremony.

Hi Arc-n-spark: during the opening ceremony NBC notoriously also cut the very moving memorial section for the 7/7 bombings, on the grounds that "it was not tailored to an American audience." We might try to imagine the reaction in your country if we'd cut a 9/11 tribute on comparable grounds.

A-a-anyway...

Queen: Is it time to leave for the Olympic closing ceremony?
Flunky: Erm, word is you should give it a miss, your Maj. Apparently it is going to be just the kind of unfocused kitschy mess we'd feared for the opening ceremony, but which that one gloriously, wackily exceeded by miles. No such luck this time, I'm afraid.
Queen: But I want to see The Who - I'm a huge fan, you know.
Flunky: Then probably better to stay in with a DVD. Daniel Craig is free tonight; he can pop round and watch it with you.
Queen: Well OK, but just so long as I can play along through my Hiwatt stack...

Still. Some pretty pictures:

Though to me this was the moment that captured the spirit of 2012:

I missed it all except for the Cycling road race which I thought was a " FAIL ". On the part of the coverage. ( We don't have cable TV and watch all TV programming thru Internet...With Apple it is much cheaper and we get to watch what we would prefer rather than the subscribed/overpriced drivel )....NBC's coverage of International sports always leaves me frustrated as it is always edited to emphasize the drama and entertainment over the actual competition... " Let's package this like American Idol so they will understand "...PUKE...
As far as the British CyclingTeams strategy, I can't wait to read the fallback on Pro Cycling Mag and other Publications....

As far as Ceri's pic post of that expression... Had I made it to world class status in Alpine Ski Racing or Cycling, I probably would have split my head in two halves from smiling just to be there, let alone place in an event....

A very Big Thumbs Up to all the athletes who made it there regardless of placing. ( this however does not include the idiots who either tanked their competition or doped   )

Aside from all the hoopla (opening and closing cermoneys) I thought it was a breat success. I watched most of what was on tv and enjoyed every minute.

last night was the worst bit of the whole Olympics.

cant say i was overly impressed with anybody. it was nice to see George Michael seemingly happy and healthy - i dont care much for his music, but he deserves good health at least for his talent, which you cant deny. The Who performed best i think, but even that wasnt mind bending. My Generation was predictably mega though. Annie lennox's show was good, but again i dont really want to listen to her. the various Beatles covers were good, even Russell Brand's "I Am The Walrus" - a personal favourite - was well done considering he cant sing.

lennons head was good, Freddie Mercury controlling the crowd despite being dead for 20 years was genius. anything Jessie J was involved in sucked, but she had a skin tone leotard on so i'll let her off. :P

it shouldnt be compared to the opening ceremony, last night was about everybody celebrating 4 years of hard graft (7 for the organisers) and letting their hair down.

as for the athletes - other than a couple of blotches, mostly football (which needs to be dropped), doping, and the shocking badminton farce, everybody done themselves proud. my main highlights are GB getting gold and silver in the 2 man kayaking slalom, Mo Farah and everything he did, and watching Mark Cavendish spit his dummy after the road race. i dont like him for some reason.

Thanks London, well done!

Who arranged for the fantastic weather?

Very happy the Pythons got their recognition but not sure why Bollywood got a routine in on that song.

Very happy one of the Floyd showed up, one more playing acoustic and it would have been a really over the top event for me.

Cheers.

Thanks, man! We've been sticking pins in dolls for months to make that happen.

Partly because we have a huge Asian community - we're the biggest market for Bollywood movies outside India. And I suspect partly to put our Prime Minister's nose out of joint: he said the other day we do too much Indian dancing in high schools and not enough team sports. News to many of us.

Yeah, I was completely confused why Dave Gilmour wasn't there. Noel Gallagher? That absence I get...

While we're about it, Brian May is of course a shoo-in for these deals. But We Will Rock You? When for the closing Olympic ceremony it obviously should have been We Are the Champions, right? I mean: d'uh!

Cheers - C

As a Brit I would like to make no apologies for any of these acts, because as pop music they are awesome, Gary Barlow writes some fantastic pop songs and George Michael has come out with some of the best pop music there is. Just because it's not guitar based like most people here enjoy doesn't change the fact that it is very very good music for the people that it is aimed at.

I was not blown away by the closing ceremony. Perhaps because I was expecting great things after the opening ceremony, which I thought was absolutely fantastic, I was extremely dissapointed to see One Direction, Jessie J several times, again (she was in the opening ceremony?), tinie tempah, and the Spice Girls. Even when good artists came on, like Annie Lennox, Brian May (& Queen + Jessie J  ), The Who and The Kaiser Chiefs, they did not stay for long. The Set list was in a bad order-the emotions and mood of each song did not match, so the mood was constantly changing completely every song-bad for a concert. Brian May was awesome, but even he couldn't turn it around. I think there was just too much mainstream pop trash-how on earth have One Direction, Spice Girls and Jessie J become icons of british culture, that we should celebrate? Not in my book

I've been waiting for ages to see Eric Clapton and also The Rolling Stones in one of these concerts- I didn't see them in the Queen's Jubilee concert either... A shame-they would have been amazing.

i know not everyone likes guitars etc, but surely tom jones, adele, to name two would have been a better bet?

Howdy!

Both Mrs BigHair and I have thoroughly enjoyed the BBC's coverage of the Olympics. Great to see Team GB do so well. Super impressed by Mo Farah (10000m & 5000m gold) & Nicola Adams (Female Boxing - She smashed it!).

Regarding the musical content for the opening and closing ceremonies, we thought the Kaiser Chiefs were pretty tight and Brian May sounded awesome! I was also pleasantly surprised to see Mike Oldfield do his bit...

Image

... Great stuff! 8)

Highlight of the closing ceremony had to be the truly stellar performance from teen boy band sensation, One Direction...

Image

... 5 Biebers for the price of one. A Classic example of Great British Pop value right there. :D

Enjoy!

Andy
