I have a japanese strat and the pickups don't respond when I use the pickup switch so I have to shake the pickup until it works. Also the neck is very thin and the frets are like razor blades. I was wondering if it would be a good idea to put in texas specials and put a mahogany neck on it to play the blues. What are your opinions on this.

You do need fretwork and you've got bad solder joints. If the neck is too thin for your tastes, go ahead and replace it. The mahogany neck won't make it better for the blues, most of your tone is the pups and your pick attack...your style of playing. A cheaper maple or maple/rosewood neck will do fine. Most strat blues players get along fine with a maple neck....Clapton, Jimi, Buddy, etc..
No need for the added expense unless you like the mahogany look. The extra $20 you'd pay for a Warmoth mahogany neck would pretty much pay for new pots, cap and a new 5 way switch. The texas specials are just fine for bluesy rock and such.

You know, I'm all for modding the Strats. That's one of the great things about them is they're so great to mod. I've got TX Specials and I love them. The muddy, middy, not good for heartbreaking Strat cleans critique is totally wrong about mine, as expertly set up at Wild West Guitars. The setup appears to make a huge difference, because mine are vintage, do great Strat cleans, have excellent sustain, and the guitar wizard at Wild West did tell me he spent a fair amount of time adjusting them just right to get the even volume on all pickups and great tone. If you put them up by the strings the strong magnets will mess up your tone and sustain. All I can tell you is my TX Specials are very excellent and 100 percent classic Strat tone. The mahogany neck also sounds cool. It's not all that it will sound better - EC and Buddy Guy and many others use maple, while Mayer and Lindsey Buckingham and Knoppfler use rosewood which I love. It's just that you'll have modded it to be your unique instrument. Mahogany may be darker than rosewood and so you may want to try it out.
