This past weekend was a reunion of the Noseworthy clan of Pouch Cove,NL, Canada. The Noseworthys-from the Devon-Cornwall part of southwest England-were among the first settlers in Pouch (pronounced pooch) as the first of my forebears to settle there was a carpenter and was indispensible for house building.Anyway music has a big part of the family for many generations and consequently a big jam session was the highlight of the weekend. My 71 year old uncle lead the "band" with nuggets from the 50s by Elvis,Carl Perkins,Chuck Berry etc. With 4 lead players among us there were plenty of lead breaks and I even managed to push through the pain in my hands and do a couple-that is until my hands went numb.My nephew and a cousin who are close together in age and have done several recordings, got into a guitar duel that got almost everybody out of their seats and traded riffs for about 10 minutes, there was no clear winner.Another cousin, who told me that I was his biggest influence, did a dead on job of SRV's version of Little Wing and threw in some of his own very tasty improvisations.

One person who wowed and surprised everyone was the 12 year old grandson of one of my cousins. He got up with his $100 Walmart Special acoustic guitar and blew everyone away by playing something by Soundgarden-I think and some other mre current stuff. It's the first time that I saw the kid but he reminded me so much of Jimi Hendrix. He hardly spoke and when he did it was almost in whispers and even at 12 years old he had an aura of coolness about him.The fact that he is part African/ Canadian and a southpaw also adds to the resemblance.I wish that I could afford to but him a Strat starter set up because he's definitely going to make something of himself musically and really could do with a hand up. His grandmother says that he only puts down the guitar to eat and is at it day in and day out.

BTW all the guys raved over my Jimmie Vaughn Strat/Blues Jr. combo and commented how much it sounded like a 60s Strat, which is what I've been saying all along.

Great ! Reminding me of last summers family reunion. In the evening there were much participation from many relatives . But that took a more jazzy direction , and I was really thrilled with many of the contributions . Overall unexpected high class ( I did not participate - not too comfortable with playing jazz-at that level)
Yeah , someone should back up that 'little Jimi' ! I did put the pressure to the parents of a now 18 year kid - to get him some real instruments (After I had given his Strat-clone a proper set-up) . The boy is obviously talented , and is now on a High School with music/guitar as the main subjects. So put a little pressure on there , if you can't buy him the real thing :D

You are so fortunate to be part of a family with that kind of talent! It sounds like a perfect way to spend time together! Im the only one in our entire clan who plays..working on the Grandkids now hoping I can get at least one to go the music route!

Can you afford to give him one of your guitars that doesn't get played very often?

Hi Yodacaster,I'd really like to give him one of my guitars that I don't play often but the thing is that the ones that I don't play often are my rarest and most valuable and the reason that they don't get much play is because I want to spare them from too much wear and tear.I think that I'll just keep an eye open at my buddy's music store as he sometimes gets quite good but little used Squier Strats for around $100.I think that would be the best way to go along with good used small pawn shop amp.

enjoy the family jams while you can.

in my younger days-the 60's-we frequently had family jams. lots of us played instruments. unfortunately as time went, some passed on, and others either don't play or can't play anymore.

the exception is my uncle, who is in his mid 80's. he can play today as good as ever, on the same kit he has owned for about 60 years.
