A dunlop steel slide is a very practical way to go! I like the sound of thick glass slides but, after I broke one on a band mate's hard wood floor, I realized that glass can be very impractical...so, if you play a glass slide, make sure you have a replacement during crucial playing moments! It takes a little getting used to but, with practice, the material you use is irrelevant in slide playing... I started playing with a VERY thick metal slide (like socket density) and then realized I better learn how to play with a standard metal slide as my chances of finding a replacement of the the thick one almost nil.

I've gone through a lot of testing until I found the right slide for me.

I had all kinds of glass, chrome and brass slides in different sizes and legthes. I also tried the Jet-Slides http://www.tone-toys.com/shop/Jet-Slide

I finally found my holy grails in slides:

Dunlop 212 glass slide (they're shorter, which I prefer and have the smallest inner diameter).
I have pretty long and thin fingers and use this one on my ringfinger for slide on Strats.

My absolute favorite is my new brass slide from Daddy Slide, a Dr. Slide Signature with even smaller diameter and almost the same length as the Dunlop 212.
This one sounds amazing on my Republic Delta Rocket resonator guitar and I wear it on my pinky.
It's heavy as hell. High mass, unbelievable tone!

I have the steel tube type. I think it's a Dunlop. In any case, I was never very good at slide.
