Glass. I've made a few myself, it's not easy. I bought this one, made from a wine bottle, beautiful slide. It's thick and heavy, which I need for a Reso. It came in a little padded tube with the wine label stuck on 8)

I use glass as well. I was fortunate to work in a Chemistry Department which had a glass blower and I got him to make me some heavy walled slides in return for a pint of John Smith's bitter.
Good deal all round :)

My favourite slide is one that I made from the frame of a discarded wheelchair. The older Everest-Jennings chairs were made of very heavily chromed steel that had very thick walls so they give you a great and clear, ringing tone.I used a heavy duty pipe cutter to remove a straight piece of frame and just filed and sanded the edges until they were rounded and posed no danger of cutting anyone.

a ceramic tone bar from Rocky Mountain Slides to use with my lapsteel. I really like that ceramic tone bar, I'll probably end up ordering a regular slide from them too someday.

Just checked these guys out, and I must say, they seem to have a very good selection. I'm going to order myself a Custom Shop In the Raw slide! http://www.rockymountainslides.com/in-the-raw.html That thing sounds like fun!
Thanks for the new company!

I have a number of glass and chrome.

My favorite is a Craftsman deep-socket ...

Ditto for the deep socket, big enough to fit on my middle finger Billy Gibbons style. Also I prefer a backwards Latch Lake AcoustiGlide that I chromed because it is like a metal wine bottleneck, so it doesn't break. Also use a real Coricidin bottle and have one of those approximate reissues. For real low action guitars I use a neodymium magnet in the bottle or stuck to the metal slide sometimes too.

Dunlop 218 tempered glass slides, with some sticky-back felt stuck inside to prevent slipping and absorb condensation and/or sweat...the felt also makes the slide fit tighter on my (pinky) finger. I like the weight, wall thickness, length and balance of this particular Dunlop model.

I also have made several slides from deep-wall sockets; I prefer Craftsman or Snap-On. I cut off the heavy "drive" end where the socket wrench is inserted with a chop saw (balances the weight better) and smooth out the cut end with a drill press and a bench grinder. Then I insert some sticky-back felt for the same reasons as listed above. A 5/8" socket fits my pinky snugly (a bit too snug until the felt flattens out) but I have made a variety of sizes (length and circumference) to give or sell to friends and various acquaintances.

I prefer the sound and feel of the Dunlop 218 glass slides, but carry around one of my "socket slide" creations, because it won't break if I drop it.

I've used lighters, at one time I used a ham bone. The whole bone thing started to freak me out though. I have a chrome toilet paper roll holder that I use sometimes too. I have a box of them. For bottlenecks, I started using my tile saw. I does a pretty nice job. It amazes me how many different tones you can get. Every slide is different.

I use Dunlop. Brass on my Strat, and glass on the LP. Just sounds good that way.

I always used to lay my slides in strange places and then forget where I did put them... sooo... I bought me a $50 thick brass slide, with a wonderful sound. Now I don´t dare to put it somewhere where I can´t find it. :-) And I keep it shiny as gold all the time or else my finger will get all black by that dirty brass... :-)

I never thought about cutting the heavy end off the deep socket Armadillo... If I have a flat tire, it also has to fit on my torque wrench to get the wheel off!!! lol

I think that may void the snap-on warranty
