I'd also like to point out that this is a society of instant gratification. Texting, emailing, Googling, etc. We let technology think for us. (some times) I personally enjoy sending letters, and receiving them. I like the anticipation, and the fact that you have to think about what you write before sending it off. If you haven't, which I'm sure some forumers haven't, just do it with a far away friend. It's really satisfying.

Also, I'll have you know that I'm very polite in person. Last week, I gave my spot away to an old lady with bags of bird seed and offered to help her load them. She declined my help twice, once at the register, and once at her car while she was about to load, and I was passing by.

I may be part of this generation, where a large portion of the youth are pretty assbackward, but I'm not one of them, and there are actually many kindhearted youth out there.

I think your absolutely correct. The "System" all of it, is grooming us to be sheep. Compliant helpless sheep.

I work in a Parish (in Louisiana we have Parishes and not counties) facility that serves the general public. I put up with rude ungrateful disrespectful snots of all ages. They are all freaking helpless and have only one talent, finding new ways to get free stuff from the government.

Manners is definitely something people lack today. I had a lady give me the stink eye for opening the door for her! I reckon i am lucky she didn't sue me for sexual harassment

even for severe crimes, like this douche in Colorado, he knows he will only get a solitary cell ( Bed and Food) or instant painless death. for some people that's not that bad. I think lethal injection is a joke anyways, if you did something bad enough to get the death penalty you should suffer for it. they made it simply to comfortable, the electric chair and hangman's noose worked wonders because you saw them twitch and it scared the crap out of you. now they just go to sleep.
I guarantee you if we brought back some of the medieval forms of punishment people wouldn't do this stupid s%$## anymore.

Like this, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iron_maide ... ure_device)

I promise you if we started sticking convicted murderers in these the crime rate would drastically drop.

One of my favourite things is when someone talks to me like some kind of delinquent based on appearance and then they're surprised to hear the way I speak.

The education system where I live is pretty different where I live to the US. I go to a top grammar school with some fairly insane rules, mostly to do with uniform. There's even a computer system on which it gets marked down if you're late or miss a homework or need to go to the toilet or anything, so sometimes it feels as though respect isn't being given both ways. I try to be respectful of anyone, but if they like they can easily opt out by being rude.

I went to a school in Germany as part of a a foreign exchange last year, and they had much more relaxed rules, but everyone was generally respectful if they were actually speaking to a teacher. In their system all of the focus is on education and there is very little focus on pastoral issues. I think the fact that young people there are given so many liberties like being able to drink alcohol or smoke at 16 makes them act more maturely because they are treated as such.

That's just my take on respect.

With modern correctness everyone has a right to do what ever they want  at least thats what they think! Morals have taken the back seat to some because they feel they are allowed to be an $@! in society.

I may be older now but being over 6"4" and 260 covered with tattoo's not many would attempt to cut in front of me. That said I would have moved this dude aside! Years ago I had a dude say something to the Wife that was in appropriate and when I said something to him he just run his mouth he and his friends didn't care what I said. He then got in my face a little to close so I proceeded to toss him threw the plate window of the restaurant. His friends were no help to him!

I am a very tall guy also, but some people just think they are invincible. then one day they get taught a big lesson in humility. unfortunately i wasnt the one to teach this guy that lesson, but one day he will find out
I have been popped in the nose for mouthing off, and my father was completely justified in doing so  and I learned my lesson very quickly. looking back now, I see that every physical altercation I have ever been in was due to someone being a loud obnoxious a$$hole. I remember on my 21st birthday I had to lay someone out for yelling at and pushing his girl around. I did the rite thing and i still had to spend the night with the guy on a cold hard bench  it was worth it though.

Gawd I could go on about this for days. Common courtesy, manners and mutual respect are eroding away. Things as simple as chewing with your mouth shut, not talking with food in your mouth, not talking during a movie or concert, not texting in a theater, etc. can make life so much more enjoyable for others. We seem to live in a me, me, me world now where small personal sacrifice is just to much for many to consider. I do my best to make my son understand and use good morals, etiquette and manners all of which work towards respect for others.

My 20yr old stepson, who seems like a lost cause, thought he'd be nice to his brother when we were at a water park last week. He spotted a pair of Spongebob Squarepants sunglasses in the lost and found bucket and decided to take them for his little brother. Much to my delight the little fella knew it was wrong and didn't want them. Much to my dismay the 20yr old took them for his brother anyway. Some people just don't get it and may never get it.

Despite what comes my way I try my best to be the kind of person I'd like others to be towards me. I live by the golden rule which predates all modern religions. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

I also try to see things from the other persons perspective.
I try to remember that many other people have sacrificed their time, energy and money for me so I could be where I am today. If they could do it for me then why shouldn't I do it for them? I also keep in mind that I should live part of my life for the many who have paid the ultimate sacrifice so that I can live the life I have. Don't you think I should do that best way that I can?

The Golden Rule might sound corny, but if more people lived by it, the world would be a much better place. But no, I don't think rude obnoxious people are anything new, I'm pretty sure they have been around since the dawn of man and I'm pretty sure they will be around until the human race comes to an end. And if you think you are going to change them by kicking their asses, you are probably right, they'll change - for a couple of weeks, maybe. Eventually they just go right back to being the same old jerkwads. My free advice - and free advice is usually worth what you pay for it - don't take it so seriously. If someone acts like a douche to you, just have a good laugh and tell them to get lost.

but it feels so much better to bury your knuckles in the huge flapping mass of tissue called their face
but on a serious note my wife said the kind of the same thing you did.
it may be because it is still fresh on my mind or i may be crazy, but it just seems more common in the past 10 years.

All I can say is pick your battles. Some are just best to let slide, while some are not. Let them make the first aggression. After that you are just defending.

Schools are another circumstance. 0 tolerance is the norm. So wait until you are off campus before engaging if it is that important.

This world is not the same as it once was, and I blame it on lack of discipline with our youth. I call this the "wus-ification of the world conspiracy".
