I was 15 in 1986. So of course I started out playing hair metal. First songs were:

1. Nobody's Fool & Shake Me-Cinderella
2. Talk Dirty To Me-Poison

Well, you see where I'm going.

I got my first bass guitar in August of 1988. I was 16, going on 17 the next December. A friend of mine at the time was playing guitar and since I was hanging around him all of the time we had the idea we should start a band. Before that, I was either going to be a cartoonist or fiction writer, but music proved to be a more powerful artistic muse for me. Been playing ever since. Technically, I have been playing guitar just as long, since one of my oldest sister gave me her nylon string acoustic when I got started on bass. Needless to say, the bass was my main interest. It just grabbed my attention completely. Besides, there were plenty of guitarists around and few bassists. It made it a lot easier to find people to jam with. I just love the possibilities I can have with it.

Got my first guitar at 12. It was totally unplayable with the action about a quarter mile off the fretboard and no adjustable truss rod, and it had Heavy Duty Jumbo Barbed Wire Black Diamond strings on it. I Got my first Fender at 14 I saved up all my paper route earnings for a year and got it second hand. It was a huge step up but was still a piece of crap that woundn't stay in tune and had a neck like a baseball bat....but hey it had three pick-ups and Bob Dylan used one on Like a Rolling Stone and two years later Mr. James Marshall Hendrix showed the world the potential possibilites that could be had messin' with one of these things......seven years later after having shaved the neck and replacing the bridge I traded it for a Les Paul...in hindsight very regretfully :(

Two years ago, at the age of 54. As far as a mid-life (or post mid-life) crisis goes, it's been pretty good! You're never too old to learn something new, including something as intimidating as playing music when you've had no musical training whatsoever.

Been playing since I was 17. Now I'm 38. I should be sooooo much better!

T-Model Ford didn't start playing guitar until he was around 58, I believe. It's sad he's in bad shape these days. I hope he pulls through.

Started at age 35 or so and stopped and started a number of times. Didn't get semi -serious about it until about 3 years ago. Life still gets in the way, though, even now at 61... Still enjoy it as long as I keep my expectations realistic...
