I've never heard any music that moves me like SRV does. The man was a master guitarist and bluesman. His music inspired me to really learn the guitar - not just a few chords and basic strumming that was in the country music I listened to. He opened the door for me to discover Clapton, ZZ Top, and the blues in general, something I had never been open to or interested in before. I've been thinking about getting a tattoo sort of in his honor.

Stevie had this chest tattoo done of a peacock when he was 19 after a night of heavy drinking. My low pain tolerance (and hairy chest) means I won't be going for that exactly, but I really like the design and I think it's a lot cooler than John Mayer's "SRV" tattoo:

Image

So, after lots of internet searching, I was able to come up with exactly one person who had a well-done copy of the peacock tattoo, on her chest. From the two angles she posted, I was able to construct (read: copy/paste in MS paint) a decent version of the tattoo that I'm thinking of getting:

Simple enough to be relatively inexpensive and still well-done, yet elaborate enough to be interesting in its own right. I want to get it on my left forearm (fretting hand) at some point, hopefully in the next year if I can get my foot in the door at a decent job after college.

Thoughts? Opinions? Criticisms, friendly words of warning?

If you've got any music / artist related tattoos, here's a good place to show them off too!

If you feel the need to ask people on line, you are probably not ready to commit to such a permanent fixture on your body.

If you're going to wear the same shirt for the rest of your life, you'd better be dang sure that YOU like the shirt, regardless of what anyone else says. The same goes for a tattoo.

Of course, this is coming from someone who has never had (and with 99.9% probability, never will) have a tattoo.

You have to remember, too, that Stevie has been gone a long time - he'll never know you got the tatoo, let alone that it was in his honor.

Not so much that, but more of a recognition of what his music means to me.

Hence why I definitely wouldn't get it now. My plan is decide what I want now, then look at it every day and see if I still like it, and then wait some more. Between that and waiting for job security, it'll be a while before I get it and i'll be sure it's something I want

You want to pay tribute to SRV?...Learn his music, play it well, put your own twist on it and pass it on to others...that is what SRV would have done (and did with Jimi's Little Wing). Skip the tat.

FWIW

I had thought of doing the same thing to cover a tat of a flying v with a strat and other background stuff, but every artist I talk to said it would be really hard to do. Since there is so much to cover up. One artist quoted about $500. I can get alot of gear for $500!

Once you get a Tattoo more will be following. Body location has a lot to do with the pain when getting done. Other then Religious don't get ant names or initials unless they are of your children or grandchildren.

In case you don't know, Stevie wanted a tattoo of a phoenix, not peacock. You might want to rethink getting the same tattoo as a guy who probably regretted his.

Classic ^^^
Getting a tattoo just like SRV's makes about as much sense as buying the exact equipment SRV used, dressing like he did and playing his music note for note.....

A Parody of a great artist does not make you great....
Be original, the whole point of a Tattoo is to have a unique statement....Somehow that seems to have been a lost translation lately with the amount of copycat tattoo's I see..

Think about this......Look at the next Elvis Parody you can see and ask yourself if that is the impression you want to project.... :?:

Yeah, it was supposed to be a majestic phoenix rising from the ashes but the artist wouldn't give him a break from tattooing the most painful part of the body so it ended up looking like this instead. But regardless of intent, the final form still turned out to be a pretty cool design in its own right.

Would never think of it, relationships are infinitely more temporary than ink :P

The point isn't to try to be him; that would be ineffective and stupid. I've seen plenty of tattoos of Hendrix's face or Stevie's etc, I think this is a cooler way of doing the same thing as a face tattoo but less.... tacky? I've never been a fan of "face" tattoos, plus it's more likely than not that they'll come out looking disfigured.
