I found an article in Guitar Player Magazine discussing the Kemper Profiling Amplifier. It was the first I'd heard of this very interesting concept.

Found a few demos on youtube and the profiles that were created were good enough that I could not tell the original from the profile through my computer speakers. The guitar players could almost always tell the difference although it was harder with clean tones.

Nice feature is that profiles can be shared.

I only watched for about 15 minutes or so but I cannot say that I was impressed by the emulation. I have a Line-6 AX2-212 here at home and I heard the same shortcomings in the Kemper model that I routinely hear in my Line-6. The overall tone of the emulation is close enough but the interaction and dynamics fall very short. The guitarist in the video was able to tell the difference in a blind comparison and I was also able to tell and I'm just listening through computer speakers. There is no substitute for a real amp.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

I had a fairly long play with one of these a few months back when my local music store got one in.

Wasn't that impressed, if I'm honest - they had profiled a few of their rather nice amps which they had in the store, and although it could get pretty close to some of them in some ways, it just didn't respond in anywhere near the same way when played back to back with them, felt very two dimensional, particularly those slightly overdriven tones which are so hard to model.

If it was cheap, it would be a fun little toy to have around, but with a four figure price tag, it's just not even remotely tempting. Once the technology matures a bit and the price comes down, some interesting things could come of it.

BMW, I was wondering the same thing.
Brother Dave turned me onto Line-6 yesterday and
I've been studying the Line-6 line-up.
Gosh, they have it all, why re-invent the wheel?
And spend a lot of money and training time doing so.
There must be some applications for certain projects.
I am seeking a Line-6 Pod.
