Try playing a new genre of music, and don't try and write something to record, just write it, if it happens to be great then thats a bonus but if not then consider it a learning experience.

Also don't write off other guitarists because they play differently to you, you never know what you could learn from them.

I'm being completely serious here, I'm starting to think your idea of "robot" is "anyone that doesn't try to play exactly what I want".

Try being a tad more open-minded, you'll have so many more people to play with.

Hey SK

Just play....for the fun of it.....writing somehing to record will flow when its ready probably when your least expecting it. find some other guitarists who just want to jam a variety of style etc.

at the end of the day its supposed to be fun isn't it!!!

good luck

It would probably do you good to explore different kinds of music, you can learn stuff from basically anything.
I think I was about your age when I lost all my "Everything released before 19XX is better" scruples. So try and listen to everything you can get your hands on, without going into it with any preconceptions or prejudice.

Most of all, don't worry about struggling to find like-minded musicians. Fourteen year olds aren't exactly known for their good taste in music, so play with anyone you can. Jimmy Page played bass when he first joined the Yardbirds, I'm sure you can survive a few Metallica covers or whatever.

And what do you mean by robots?

SK...take a couple of lessons. Great way to find other musicians, learn something new and trying something out of your comfort zone can be fun if you let it be.

I have done this three times in my 40 years of playing and it has always helped to get me going again.

FWIW

In fairness that's sort of something you pick up by playing with other people. Just be glad you'll probably never have to play with Irish Traditional musicians.

i think playing outside of your comfort zone can only be rewarding as a musician. get used to it and most of all enjoy it. for me, it is so cool to be able to play country, metal, punk and whatever i'm sitting in on at the time. i suck as a guitar player. but i can play along with almost anything i'm invited to. hell, it impresses a few folks.
young man, you will learn so much about what it is you want to do with music by getting out of the comfort zone. do a little reading on the beatles and other bands you like. i "think" they will say pretty much the same. explore and challenge yourself. you will get out of this rut and i think it will bring some new tunes on board. some good, some bad. you will find your mojo. you have alot of talent.
get busy.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Sometimes in order to write, you need to have experiences. Make an adventure out of your summer. I agree with other members about exploring other genres. Maybe find a music camp, or take some lessons, work on scales, technique, your sound. I was once like that a long time ago, stuck on a certain type of music, and everything else sucks. Once I opened up to the bigger picture, I started to play everything from hard rock, floyd, steely dan, james taylor, and blues..etc..etc. Besides I once thought like you, that i needed someone else to play with, then I got big into Neil Young, and from him I learned 2 of the biggest lessons I could...1 you don't need anybody else..he has played in bands, and solo, and done quite well for himself! an 2 it's ok to make mistakes! Carry on little dude!!!!! If your that sad...try thy blues!

Seems to me that creative ideas come in chunks, sometimes with a bunch in a row and then dry spells in between. I use the time between to just practice and not even try to write anything until an idea comes on it's own.

I also think it's normal to have a ton of ideas that don't end up working into something worthy of recording.

If you aren't finding people around you to work with, try (or keep trying) collaborating online with different folks.

Yea lol. I'm with a metal drummer and a mariachi bassist. Ideas are stewing until we can get a reliable, constantly open, place to practice.
