I'd rather hear from other players using it for this purpose (if it works).

So, you own the computer that comes with the software... it's SITTING RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU.. and you haven't even tried to use it as a source of backing tracks. You just want someone online to tell you if it works or not.

Okay.

Yes, it works for this purpose. Now go figure it out. You could start by launching the program.

Oh, I forgot, I also have Cubase on my Mac Pro lap top and that's pretty portable.

Man that is annoying, why do good products get dropped all the time.
Maybe Roland/Boss has replaced the js-5 with a new box, but I can't find anything about one.

The Analog Delay suffered this fate as well.

Another idea is use a Boss Loop Station.

Just a thought.

1. I didn't realize that it came as part of 10.4 originally.
2. It doesn't come with any of the Jam Packs.
3. I have plenty of MIDI editor/players and audio recorders (CakeWalk, SoundForge, Guitar Pro, TabEdit, MusEdit, etc.).

What I didn't want to do is have to notate the backing tracks laboriously or record some lame progression myself - hey, I'm busy and I'm lazy. ;)

The Boss JS-5 is nice in that you get a gazillion styles with lots of variability including key change. Fast and simple. And you can see the chord changes on the LCD display so I don't have to go further in the notation and label every chord.

Thanks for alerting to the fact that I have GarageBand though. :)
