Once again I'm looking for backing tracks - but not online. Mainly software if any exists.

Erm, not something where you have to chord out the entire thing or do it note-by-note (eeks) - something with stock, pre-built, configurable (would be excellent) backing tracks. I need to be able to do blues/rock/jazz/progressive chord progressions in any key or mode so that I can practice over them.

Appreciate your help!

Robert

Where do I get one though? Guitar Center and Musicians Friend balk completely on it. I don't think that Boss makes these anymore and there is no updated model of this type available from them.

What about GarageBand (Apple)? It has Jam Packs and configurable backing. And I have an iMac. But I can't find any definitives about its efficacy here.

Do I have to? ;)

I'd rather hear from other players using it for this purpose (if it works). Unfortunately, reviews of that magnitude and level for Apple software tend to be hard to find. I didn't see anything at the GuitarCenter site software that fit the bill otherwise.

Unfortunately, again, I don't happen to have a friend with a guitar to play backing progressions for me (like the good ole' days back in Philly). I could do this myself but it would be rather bland (I'm no rhythm wizard) and may just compound any flaws in my playing - this is for scale/solo/riff 'homework' from my guitar teacher.

Thanks

Ack! ;)

But I don't want backing tracks for songs (I already have enough songs for real or in MIDI (GuitarPro) and don't mind playing along with the solos/riffs already there). What I want is some generic progressions (funk/jazz/blues/rock/etc.) in different keys. Configurability of the progression to some extent would be nice (change of key or addition/omission of chords in the progression).

This seems to be much to ask. You'd think that by now there'd be an entire industry for just this type of thing. Static tracks for basic learning, yeah tons of them - very inflexible. I'm a bit beyond basic here.

For instance, I need to solo/riff over G modally with various G modal chord progressions (including quartal chords). This means: Gmaj7, Am7, Bm7, Cmaj7, D9, etc. Additionally, wouldn't it be great to extend this to other keys, maybe with transposed progressions (just to solidify the lesson)?

There isn't anything like this?

The Boss JS-5 is no longer being made. I am fortunate enough to have one and it is great. You might be able to find one used on eBay.

This is what I thought (I remember it back in the day).

I had considered checking eBay as well - tricky that but it may pay off. :)

Thanks!

Man that is annoying, why do good products get dropped all the time.
Maybe Roland/Boss has replaced the js-5 with a new box, but I can't find anything about one.

As far as I know they did not.

Was talking to a Roland rep this weekend, (they were demoing some products and using a JS-5 jam station to back them !!!!)

He said the closest thing the have now in their product lineup is the Roland SonicCell

I use Cubase on my imac for all my needs. I can record progs and complete songs then write leads to fit them. It works fantastic.

I have Cubase on my PC too,
but it sure is not very portable :)

The JS-5 and Sonic-cell just plug direct into an amp and play off a memory card.
