How funny, I just received a catalogue from this website yesterday: https://www.fleamarketmusic.com/Default.asp

They have all kinds of things in relation to the ukulele. I use to have one that I picked up on an impulse purchase when I first started playing bass. I had no clue how it was even tuned or anything. I could barely even play the bass at the time, so I don't know what I would have done with that. I should have purchased a book to go with it to learn, but I never did. I was 16 or 17 years old at the time, so I was rather clueless about a lot of things, anyway.

I'd like to pick one up and actually learn how to play it. I'd think it would be fun. The Fender models actually look pretty nice. I'm also interested in that ukulele bass that came out recently, as well.

Those U-Basses are nice, but not cheap (well not for a uke, but very competitively priced for a bass guitar). They are, in fact essentially short-scale bass guitars (developed by Kala in conjunction with Road Toad), rather than bass ukuleles, i.e, tuned EADG, rather than DGBE/GCEA. You can get them in acoustic or solid-bodied versions, but you'd still need to run the acoustic through an amp. Here's our Clara reviewing ours:

If you do go pick up a uke and are still unsure of the tuning, I've put the full details regarding tuning in the post that kicked off this thread. But if that's not clear, feel free to ask away :)

Hi Olly: I'll be at Paul Simon on Sunday, with a bunch of nice people including another Forum user or two. It's a bit late now, but if you see this in time and want to send me a PM we can exchange phone numbers and hook up, if you like.

If not; well, enjoy the show. We're due clear skies, I believe. And some good support acts, including Punch Brothers and also Alison Krauss. Punch Brothers are lots of fun - it's going to be good!

Cheers - C

Yeah, I know. I've seen videos on them when they first came out. In a way, they kind of remind me of those Ashbory basses. In the early 1900's there were these giant mando basses that were tuned to standard EADG, instead of GDAE like a mandolin. I guess this is the same concept, in a way. Maybe some sort of aesthetic thing to match the other instruments. I doubt I'd actually pick up a U-Bass, when I could get a full size bass guitar for the same price or cheaper. It is rather tiny, too. I could use it to play Joy Division song for a novelty effect. There's an idea. Heh. I will say, it could make a decent travel instrument, though.

I don't know what became of the uke I had. I guess it got lost with time. The last time I even saw it was probably 24 years ago. I don't recall giving it away or discarding it. I tried to look for it the last time time I visited my family in Florida. I was going to see if I could fix it up and play it. I originally paid around $35 for it, so it probably was rubbish to begin with. I bought the cheapest one I could at the time. If I get a new one, I'll do something a little more better, so I won't have any issues with it.

Hi Red Paul 1,Greetings from the sun-drenched shores of Newfoundland-the easternmost part of North America and consequently the closest to the British Isles. That's a great choice you've made in guitars,a Tele and a Strat are an essential part of every guitar players inventory as they are such great and versatile guitars.

You and your buddy must feel blessed being surrounded by 15 women while gigging-I've had dreams of that type of situation-lol.The band name is really witty and whoever came up with it has a very sharp sense of humour.BTW:When I learned the basic chords of ukelele I was 15 and I was taught to use the A D F# G tuning and a couple of years ago when I went to find a book to learn more of the ukelele's chords almost all the tunings were in C or G I believe, but the guy behind the counter did some digging and finally found one with the A tuning.Do you think that I'd be better off tuning to the C in order to play along with the guitar? It appears, judging from the number of teaching books that the "C" tuning is the most common.
