I don't see how you read that into his post.

Because he has a condescending attitude towards poorer people and has publicly stated in print here that poor people are all poor because they're lazy and don't want to work to get ahead. All from his own post. A disgraceful horrible attitude to display. No not all poor people are lazy and don't want to work. Many people work but work in the lowest paid jobs and so even though they work they're still caught in a poverty trap.

Not to mention pensioners and older people who've worked humdrum jobs all their days and just scraped by only to discover that they don't have enough money to heat the house and eat. So they have to choose one over the other.

So that's why i read that into his post. Read the posts and digest what he said before replying.

Hou-Tex wrote:
I don't buy into that "Entitlement" mentality because someone was born poor and too lazy to work hard to get ahead. That's BS

^^^ There we have it No mention of people who've worked all their days but still not been rewarded for it.

In short Hou-Tex is a complete fool in demonising a whole group of people by saying they're poor and they're poor because they're lazy.

The simple act of posting a comment like this places you squarely in the exact same position you accuse others of being. Condescending. When you tell someone they are disgusting you are attacking them personally and that has no place whatsoever in a rational debate. Like the old saying goes, when you point a finger at someone there are three fingers in your own hand pointing back at you. It's this kind of thing that is the reason you very rarely see me getting involved in these kinds of debates. Please stick to your argument and leave personal attacks out of the fray. They are always in bad form and are never appropriate; not in a setting like this. You only weaken your position in the eyes of everyone else watching when you do so. Personal attacks are the last resort of people who have no valid argument. The second and I mean the very second you resort to attacking the man instead of his position the onlookers all do several things immediately. They lose interest in your argument, they silently acknowledge your opponent as the winner and they begin to see you in a different light.

I'm not chastising you. I'm not judging you. I'm telling you this for your own benefit. This is how life works. You want to get your point across? You want to win an argument? This isn't how you do it. This is how children do it at recess and it's how desparate politicians do it when they have nothing useful to offer but it's not how adults do it.

Nuf sed.

You don't need to tell me anything for my own benefit my friend. I said people looking down on others because they're poor is disgusting, what's wrong with that statement? There is nothing wrong with that statement. it is a statement of fact. Hou-Tex opened his big mouth and let us all know what kind of person he is at heart an "i did it so why can't you do it" type. Unfortunately the world is not black and white like that. He insinuated that all poor people are poor because they're lazy and don't want to work, a blatant lie. There are millions of people here in the UK on the breadline and they have jobs, just $@!& low paid one's. They work they are not lazy.

As far as personal attacks: if i feel someone has opened their trap and ridiculed a group of people, by tarnishing them all with the same brush, then they are gonna get it in the neck and hard.

If you're backing that kind of argument then you're also going to be in the firing line sooner rather than later.

If on the other hand you admit that what he said was crass and all encompassing and wrong then maybe we can be friends again. If you don't admit he was wrong that's tantamount to you holding the same views which means basically expect what you get when you announce those views.

I never said anything that could be construed as personal to Hou-Tex until he mouthed off in his self righteous repugnant way.

I'd like to hear him apologise.

As far as winning an argument? what is the argument? Eric is overrated, when you have the op giving opinions like that that maybe he's too good for his own good.

Well i would like to but then that's letting Hou-Tex get away with crass insulting comments, basically tarring a whole world of people all with the same brush. That is not acceptable IMO.

If he apologises and retracts his statement then we'll be friends again. If not then i suggest this thread gets locked by an administrator as it's only gonna get worse.

My message to Hou-Tex is this: Don't insult whole loads of people that you don't know. You know nothing about their circumstances or their life story, or the reasons why it's gone the way it's gone for them. To classify a whole section of society as lazy just because they're poor is not clever and does you no favours whatsoever.

You brought up the subject that poor people are lazy no one else.

Let it lie! I didn't feel insulted in the least and apparently no one else did in this thread except for you. In my 7,000 posts, I've insulted lots of people and never apologized for my opinions. It's an opinion. Tex hasn't posted anything else since the last page. Why aggravate a situation?
Makes no sense.
I'm out

OK...So much for trying to resteer the boat off of the shoals.

Gorgon it really isn't worth it...a statement was made which you felt offended by....OK....
So just be the bigger guy and move on back to the subject which is a viable argument..

Clapton that is....

....kind of like assuming all people who have a lot of money in their bank account could not possibly have the depth of character to play the blues with feeling. Which brings us back to Mr. Clapton and your opinion on the subject.

Well we'll wait and see if the guilty man appears and has his say.

Insults are insults but when you mock people because they're poor and brand them all as lazy that's beyond an insult. So let's hear an apology and we can all forget it.

That would be when Hou-Tex brought up the subject of poor people and ridiculed them by branding them all as lazy people that don't want to work. Up until that point everything was Clapton related.

As for letting it lie; no, because there's too much BS like that that go's on on the net and forums in general, where people hide behind their keyboard making accusations about other people.

As i said i suggest either an apology from the person concerned or an Administrator or Moderator lock this thread down.

A joke is a joke, but when you start ridiculing a vulnerable section of society then it truly is the pits. When you stoop to that level it's a horrible thing.

My God.
Give it a rest already.
You're the only person who needs to apologise here.

And thanks for the word of warning, by the way. I'll be sure to watch for your slanderous lies about me.

Hou-Tex, if you're reading this ... don't do it. Don't give credibility where none is due.

I'm out too. Hey 63! .... wait up!
