Own the stock just to own it and not make money on it? No thanks. A vintage guitar would be more fun and profitable too. They need to go public to pay back some pretty large debt. Something like one hundred sixty million.

When you factor in inflation, MIA Starts and Tele's are a bargain. People want cheap stuff. Your $600 MIM guitar would have cost you $90 in 1969. The national average salary in 69 was a little under $5,000 a year. The average salary for 2011 was a little under $42,000.
I would rather buy a lower end $1500 MIA Fender, Gibson, Martin or Taylor and keep our people working than buy something out of China. My Gibson LP Tribute only cost me $900. It's not all dolled up and shiny with binding but it's a really sweet guitar.

MIA guitars cost what they do because they're supposed to. You adjust your pricing for inflation to keep your profit margin or move it overseas. Fender has no problem with that at all. Leo is probably crying. If he was alive, he'd probably be changing his name to Smith or something.

This IPO is a farce.

+1000!

And that goes for all consumer products.

The funny thing is, years ago, we customized our own guitars. Not the custom shop. There weren't 200 redundant models of the theme. A Strat only had a couple options, hard tail, trem, a couple of nut widths, plus maple or rosewood, lefty and a few colors. There weren't all the pickup variations, colors, pickup configurations, fret sizes, signature guitars and of course guitars that are worn out for you. The term "C" didn't mean shape but nut width. Where do you think Fender got the idea of the Pawn Shop series?? We made them!! If they just made a nice quality guitar and amp here in America I'd be happy and buy one. It's hard for me to buy a new instrument from a company that plays up its American bloodline, but manufactures most of its goods overseas. Pick on Gibson for the BS bust they went through, but at least they stay on our soil. Martin Guitars budget series ans strings are made in Mexico, but Martin hired 60 new employees in their Nazareth plant this year alone and not one person lost their job because of the budget line going to Mexico. What's nice about Martin, even their Nazareth made guitars start at affordable levels and are guaranteed for life.
