every so often when I read through these posts/topics I see people taking cheap shots at EVH, here is my 2 cents, the only way Eddie will ever get the respect someone of his talent deserves is to overdose or die in a plane/helicopter crash, now everyone is entitled to their opinion on what type of music they like they best but when folks type in the opinion that he is not a very talented guitarist, that's just a joke, pull out some early Van Halen and listen so some of Eddie's guitar work, I resepct your opinion that you don't like his music and/or style, but typing that he is untalented is just stupid

I personally think he is an amazing guitarist. The guy can play anything. I have heard clips of him playing some amazing classical stuff. He and his band play what they like to play but the guy is an all around great guitarist.

I never hear anyone saying he isn't a great guitar player. He is definitely a virtuoso. If he had gone more in a blues style, then I think he would have gotten more recognition because with his speed and talent he could bring a lot to the blues. It's hard with a kind of "hard rock/pop" style that's not pentatonic because the blues is a movement with deep rootes and authenticity like a giant Sequoia, and winds might sway it but cannot move it because it goes back to Mississippi, through Chicago to England and it's an amazing thing when you're playing those scales you can do som much and the notes sound good. Pop and rock are more like tumbleweeds and they get blown all around this way and that way and when you're just in a tumbleweed, not in a Sequoia like Clapton, you can get blown around and knocked around. EVH will stand the test of time as classic rock music because he did some unusual and great work.

Great player but sounds like a very unhappy person outside of music.

First of all, let me just say that I AM an EVH fan and always have been. I was in high school in the early 80's and, just like every other guy that age, at that time, who had ever even pick up a Strat and thought about playing, I dreamed of playing even 1/10th as good as Eddie. With that said, I think the problem with Eddie is in his very soul. There's some kind of demons in there that only he and God can exorcise. I've heard from more than a few people who have actually met him that he seems to be quite the A-Hole. It says a lot about someone when the people that love them the most can't even be in the same room with them.

Whatever it is, I hope he can eventually work it out and get back to the music. :D

Hello Hrt 4hoops,

I'll hoist a glass in Eddie's Favor.
Great player and showman, for sure.

Ahole not for me to pass that kind of judgement.

Cheers.

Ok for all those people who have "bashed" Sir Edward" all these years let's get the facts straight, Edward Van Halen is, if not THE most, then definitely in the TOP TEN of "Most IMPORTANT Musicians Of The Last Century". Now take it from a "die hard" Hendrix fan....without E.V.H. doing what he did back in the days, there'd be no bands today that would be able to keep your interest for more than 2 minutes, he literally INVENTED "speed soloing" and he's NOT just an accomplished axe-slinger, have you heard the opening keyboard piece for "Right Now"?...that's ALL E.V.H. he can also sing, and transpose with the best of them. I believe the biggest problem with "us" guitarists is that if a particular person doesn't fit our "personal mold" then we tend to trash them unfairly. Wether or not E.V.H. is an A-hole is beyond me as I've never met him (and judging from the way my life is going...I probably never will!...LoL!) But one thing IS certain, that without the musings of "Sir Edward" (I think he deserves to be knighted too.....just like Sean Connery, The Beatles, and Anthony Hopkins!....whaddya think?) we'd ALL be a lot more miserable on this planet. I can remember a time when I'd put on the "O-U-8-1-2" album and just drift away on the sweet melodic lines, vast melodies, and uncanny tightness of the rythym section, it's one of the things that kept my "fire" for playing alive, (don't forget we had a slump when "Electronic" music hit the streets!...Lol!) That was when we retired to our little closet sized bedrooms and spent most of the night frittering away on the fretboard trying to improve our skills....wow...I think I've rambled on long enough! To put it bluntly: Lay Off Of E.V.H. and for that matter give just about every guitarist out there a break will ya?...for Pete's sake it's called MUSIC: The UNIVERSAL Language...what you may not have the skills to interpret, someone else will be able to identify with and respond to in a likewise manner....so get off your a$$e$ and PLAY!...And that's ALL you do....play......

I would be impressed if he overdosed in a crashing plane.

Eddie is an important guitarist, and I don't thing anyone disputes that.

I don't agree with all his choices, but I don't slam him for them.

I think he failed to recognize the impact DLR had on the Style of Van Halen the band. He resented Dave for getting all the attention. Van Hagar wasn't all bad, but it was vanilla compared with early Van Halen.

There are many talented players out there, but what sets the successes apart is that they hit upon the right band and the right style. The pitfall is to ignore the fact that they are the sum of all parts, and assume that you can be as good without the others.

There are many examples of this. I like many bands mark2 and mark3, but it is never as good as the original. You can maintain the name, you can even make good music, rarely do they make better music.
