What are all the basic things a beginner (me) should know?

Learn your open chords! It doesn't take much work and suddenly you'll be able to play a whole host of songs and you'll feel like you've accomplished something in no time.

Understand that playing guitar can be as frustrating at times as playing golf.
Know that you are always just around the corner from the next breakthrough moment that brings happiness. Practice will get you around that corner.

That's what all guitarists finally understand. Just keep learning new things.

Get an acoustic. Pay more attention to your right hand if your right handed, and learn to pick. Practice only when you feel like it, if you don't feel like it, don't force yourself. Don't waste your time trying to copy someone else's songs, style. Just grab a handful of chords and JAM! Learn to play music, not just the guitar.

I also said to pay attention to your right hand, but you didn't note that. You might as well give up now because you don't have what it takes to be a musician. You only hear what you want to hear and filter everything else out.
