apologies for not really being remotely fender related, but i figured we all like music, so its a good place to ask.

rule numero uno - i dont want an ipod.
number 2 - nothing physically massive, but at least 8GB memory
number 3 - not stupid expensive - it gets chucked about in my car so i dont want anything too precious.
number 4 - must have a 'random' function, its all i ever use, and great to play guitar to going from beatles to jamiroquai to hendrix to kasabian in 4 songs

other than that im all ears. its been 4 or 5 years since i brought one, and its now starting to do my skull in so it needs replacing, but im well out of touch with whats good and whats not. my current one is a phillips gogear and cost about 40 GBP, looking for something similar priced, maybe a bit more. also a relatively large screen so i can see it while glimpsing at it in the car.

please help :( :( :(

Ah. Can't help, then.

I'm deeply sceptical about all things Apple, yet even I think the iPod is the one to have. I'll be curious to see if someone says there's something better out there; I haven't found it.

I finally discovered how to get my iPod to talk to the car's sound system. I've still got problems with that - nonetheless, I doubt I'll ever bother to use the CD slot again. The iFad is just too convenient.

Out of curiosity, moochy, is there a particular reason you're against iPlods? Noble anti-fashion? Price? Hatred of their wicked scheme to take over the world? All good arguments...

Cheers - C

I have an iPod classic which I would whole-heartedly recommend. If your reason for not wanting to buy one is to do with price/supporting a large multinational you could always consider going second hand.
Mine is 80gb, so I've got all my music on it as well as enough space to use as an external hard drive. I've had it 5 years now and its built like a tank.

Creative Zen also make some good products for reasonable money. As do Archos.

a little from column A, a little from column B hahaha.

mostly price. i know they are very good, but i think you pay a good 30-40% just for apple on the back. since ive been buying mp3 players, ive always managed to get something that does a perfectly reasonable job at a fraction of the cost. my current player is very good, but time is not on its side and its taken a battering.

i also dont trust the ability to withstand much abuse of a flimsy looking ipod touch. and i dont have anything else apple. no ipod, iphone, ipad, imac or ipenis. if i buy music, i buy cd's. i dont want to spend my money on invisible MB of music. itunes is no easier for transferring music than simple windows drag and drop.

im looking at a walkman at the moment. Sony invented personal music equipment, im inclined to give them a go.

i too rarely use my cd slot in the car. there is soemthing in it, but thats just for emergencys, i dont even know what it is right now. as i said, i keep my mp3 player on random, plug it into the car and off i go.

thanks, but an ipod classic is too big and bulky. my current one is not much bigger than a matchbox, maybe 2x3 inches.

I got a Sony Walkman 16mb player a lmost two years ago. I use it every day at home and at work through poewered speakers, as well as the car. It's been great and as you can see by the likk, they're inexpensive.

please don't get an Ipod, they are just shiny turds. if i were you i would get this

The samsung galaxy player! it comes with 8 gig, and its no more than 200 dollars. you can also put up to a 32 gig mirco sd card in its external memory. so its pretty boss, its the best bang you will get for your buck...hands down. you can pretty much do everything with it as you can with an IPOD touch, the only thing thats different is apple has their i tunes, and samsung is android.

don't waste your money on a shiny turd dude. stare clear of apple in general, they are such a rip off.

here is more info on it!

There's only one device worth owning but you don't want that one so my only advise is to just pick one. Any one. Just go eenie-meanie-minie-moe. There's the American Stratocaster and then there's the Samick Strat-Copy or the Mann or the Vantage. There's the Apple iPod and then there's every other kind of mp3 player. Eenie-meanie-minie-moe. Forrest always said mp3 players are like a box of chocolates.

That's my

IMO nothing is close to the ipod in terms of ease of use. Would I be right in saying you're based in the uk? If so I have a ipod classic sitting unused in a drawer that you are welcome too free of charge. I'd rather it goes somewhere and gets some use. Your call !

Itunes itself is free and you can use it to rip CDs and put them on your iPod. Simples.

I have and use I-Tunes with my I-Pod Nano. I love my Ipod but there are a few things about using an I-Pod that I do not like. I applaud your search for the ultimate MP3 player and like SK will be watching this thread for input from others and from the original poster when they make an informed decision.

Firstly, I am not a fan of I-Tunes. It is more time consuming to move MP3 songs I already have on my drive into the I-Tunes software than I like. I've not found a shortcut to move batches of MP3 files into I-Tunes so it is a one-song-at-a-time process. When dealing with the 12,000+ songs I have you can imagine how long it took.

Secondly, when synching the music in I-Tunes to the IPOD it changes the file format from MP3 to the more compressed OGG format. One might compare OGG to MP3 320 as you would compare florescent lighting to natural sunlight. It just isn't the same.

Thirdly, once on your I-Pod, there is no way to transfer music from the I-Pod back to the computer so you must have another backup plan. Even if you could transfer it, it would then be in OGG files.

Fourth, the I-Pod needs to be connected to the computer to recharge or you need to buy an AC adapter which is about $20 more. If you try connecting it to a computer without I-Tunes installed on it to charge up the thing won't charge until you install I-Tunes on it. It just sits there and does nothing.

Still, it is a handy little thing. I wouldn't want anything as large as a cellphone....or you might as well use....well....a CELLPHONE.

If you want to copy files into iTunes in bulk you can just drag an drop folders straight in, assuming you have a reasonably up to date version.

You can use any AC-USB adaptor to charge it if you just plug in the cable which came with the iPod itself. I use the one that came with my blackberry.

It does bother me that you can't copy music from the iPod to your computer though.

If you can deal with 4GB of space, I would suggest this tiny little MP3 player made by Eclipse (you can get it at Best Buy real cheap).

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Mach+Speed+-+4GB*+MP3+Player+-+Silver/3615043.p?id=1218419752424&skuId=3615043

This is how tiny it is...
