i had never used reverb until i got my main gigging amp which has it built in, a year or so after starting to play. reverb is such a glorious noise, unfortunately i dont gig anymore so that amp stays shut away, so alas i have no reverb now :(

Whilst all those options are valid there is one that stands above them all.

The mighty E7 chord.

Learning the the G string could be bought unwound, which led to bending the G string. In 1966, Black Diamond strings were all we had locally. We knew nothing. LOL

I started playing when I was a teen in the early 1970's. Not being naturally talented (pitch wise) I struggled on and off and gave up in my mid 20's after letting my guitars set and gather dust for years. Selling my Harmony acoustic, my Ventura 335 clone and my real Gibson SG.

Started back 3 years ago in my early 50's. Learning that there were such things a scales and scale patterns was a revelation. Playing the "Blues scale" has been fun but I yearn for more, so I am plowing my way ahead through majors, minors and modes etc.

Oh, I miss the Ventura but not the SG!

First song I ever learned to play was Sultans of Swing. I got the idea of bending strings upwards immediately, but for some reason I thought the bends downward were done with the whammy. Then after months of doing it that way and vaguely wondering why it didn't sound quite right I discovered the concept of pre-bending, picking and releasing.

D'oh! One of those lightbulb moments.

The self-taught musician has a very ignorant teacher...

Cheers - C

Once I started getting the barre chord shapes down I felt like I was on my way -- I was thrilled I could play any Ramones song I wanted! :)

Twenty five years on, and I still consider myself a beginner...

But I had a good moment when the school band picked me to play, instead of another student I thought was really good - because I could play my barre chords cleanly. Most of the guitars I had when I was young were set up terribly, high action, warped necks and such. The school guitars felt so easy to play, compared to my own.

I never got into playing much, but I kept my guitars because I know so many people who have regretted giving up on their instruments. Five years ago, I moved cities (from Melbourne to Perth), and I left my guitars behind. One day, having some cash, I picked up a guitar at a pawnshop, and was amazed by the quality (this was an Epiphone LP Studio). I started playing again with a real interest.

GAS kicked in. I could afford real guitars, and I was playing with renewed interest. Some fourteen guitars later, I have some of the nicest instruments, and I'm always getting better.

I'll always be a beginner. The great thing is there is always more to learn. I hope I never consider myself "good", because then the challenge will disappear. All of the items in this list are places I've been some time ago, but I'm hoping more will show up ;)

47 years into it, and I'm still a beginner. I think my biggest revelation was learning how to chicken pick/palm mute with sweet home Alabama.

When I held my first guitar and realized that I could play it as if I'd always played. At 5 I was surprised, happily :D

The first time I ever played onstage to an audience I realized that playing guitar was something I could do,and by really putting forth an effort to practice and learn everything I could would keep me playing and getting that same feeling everytime I get up to play onstage again.
