The day I bought my first Strat,it was a bit of a problem for about 5 minutes but I discovered that there were many other places on the guitar where I could strum and pick without hitting the middle pup.

Yes, absolutely. Take it down flush on all my strats.

I leave it where it is. The middle pickup is the primary piece of the equation to the strat 'quack'.

I've not tried it yet but i remember someone saying when you lower the pickup way down like that you get a big drop in volume? It's something i've never tried on any of my strats and if it was going to create a problem with the difference in volume between the pickups i might just leave it. I tend to pick more towards the neck pickup, it's not as if i pick over the middle one but now and again i hit it and i was watching some other players who do that pickup lowering thing and it was making me wonder.

Haven't made up my mind about this issue yet, i'm caught betwixt and between

I screw mine down because I never use anything but position 1 and 5 and the middle one gets in the way. I do not care for the sound of 2,3,4, and if I want a humbucking sound I use a strat with humbuckers or my Epi LP.

And yes the volume drops on a pickup when you lower it all the way.

I use my middle pickup quite frequently in the 4th position. Nails that "Cold Shot" SRV sound perfectly.

By 4th I assume you mean neck-middle? I always use middle alone for Cold Shot.... thought 4th was more for Little Wing.

But I would never drop my middle pup. I love the tone I get out of it. It's got neck warmth and bridge burn, it's lovely especially with overdrive. My other favorite is the neck-bridge combo I wired in, but that sounds a little weaker and doesn't drive as well but gives a really great clean tone.
