Don't mean a thang if it ain't got that twang! You know, when and were appropriate. Which is "almost always" for some of us. I'd say having a piercing treble is the worst tone mistake, the difference between being heard and being hurtful.

Albert Collins was the only person I know that could pull it off. 8)

that reminds me of a wedding I went to.
the best man was trying to speak, and the crowed wouldn't hush.
so the guitarist for the band cut the bass and mids out and cranked the treble up on the fender twin and started plucking high notes REALLY loud. that shut them up.
he was playing a tele............

Don’t know if this counts or not in the topic of tone but when using a Wah……Don’t Rock it back and forth at one speed while you play - change the tempo.

So many guitarists I see just go - Wah go up, Wah go down, Wah go up Wah go………rinse repeat until my ears bleed.

It's the waka-waka-waka syndrome. It's a common ailment with guitarist young and old alike.

Especially true with a new pedal. My band would cringe anytime I brought in a new pedal. I would use it on every song, to "explore its capabilities."
