I started out as a bass player many years ago, and switched to guitar only 10 years ago. Still Love the bass, though.

I have been playing guitar since I was around 5 but when I was 12 the Bass Player that was in my Family band quit. My Dad, My Grandpa, and My Uncle are all in the band and they asked me if I wanted to play bass. At first I said "Well I Dont Know I Really Like To Play Guitar" Then they said you will make at least $100.00 every time we play (Which is a fortune to a 12 year old.) And I said "OK" and to this day I still play bass in the band but we switch around and I get to play guitar as well.

Just picked up a bass after not playing one for 20 years. Lots of fun to relearn that skill set.

I started off on bass and still play in constantly. I will say that playing bass gave me some bad habbits when it came to playing guitar. Also, I am a finger style player, so this pick thing is a little strange at first.

I always wanted to play guitar and played bass reluctantly--at least at first.

I still play guitar a lot more than bass, and enjoy it more--and I'm much better at guitar than bass--but it's still fun to play both.

And to echo what's been said above--if you can play guitar you should be able to play bass a bit--at least root notes and simple riffs. (which is mostly what I play on bass)

Guitar is my main instrument, but I got a Squier P-Bass to record bass lines for the backing tracks I was making.

i'm more of a "multi talented musician". i sing, play guitar, bass, ukulele, and some other stuff but i play guitar more than bass because my fender guitar is higher quality then my yamaha bass.

I started off on Guitar at an early age, switched to Bass in my teen years, switched back in my early 20's, Quit in my late 20's, Started playing both in my mid 40's.

So, My answer is BOTH.

I've never picked up a bass in my life. Always wanted to but I had to decide between a bass or a lonestar strat (that's kind of a no brainer). So obviously my answer is guitar.

Both.

Guitar is main by a wide margin, but about 2 years ago a forming contemporary ensemble needed a Bass player, so 'have done 91 Masses and services since to date.

And 'am really sniffing seriously at a bouzouki and maybe octave mandolin.

I started playing "lead" guitar in around 1967 - coming from years of violin, I got that role because I could read music, play melodies and I also more or less became the arranger for several bands. But as the 70s wore on, appearance, show and stage presence became more important. So two bands (who wanted to go "play it like the album") dropped me. A third fired me but said I'd be rehired if I'd take the roll of arranger and I could also play bass.

So commercially, I've played bass ever since. But I've done community musicals, small jazz combos, blues and old school (say pre-mid 70s) rock and I've generally played guitar there. The dividing line with me for years really comes down to: are stage moves, a certain "look" or whatever require or not. If yes, I'm on bass, otherwise, it's guitar.
