I got some footage of it, though very low quality.

I wasn't in the heaviest period of it either, during that, I was bracing my doors and windows and lighting candles because of a power outage. The heaviest part was probably about 20 minutes of it. Then there was nothing but medium rain, and almost constant lightning for about an hour. It wasn't fun at all. Everyone's fine though, so here's the footage.

Also, I got probably 15 minutes or so of footage, but only took the best 3 minutes of it. The rest was a bunch of crap, because my brother wouldn't leave me alone, or my family was talking, or w/e.

I love big storms, especially when you're lying in bed wrapped up. Of course it helps that our houses are built out of bricks and not wood and paper

I was standing in the middle of my yard, and then ran in after lightning struck so brightly, it was day time for a bit  I can't lie, I was scared at that point. But the day after, I went on a building check with a family friend who works HVAC in Washington DC and everything was torn up. The parkway was covered in downed trees and powerlines.

Also, my mini fridge leaked all over the place. :(

But, at least I got to hang out at a friend's house for a few days. They have a pool and that was fun, so no worries. :D

Hi RandomOlBuxom: well I'm certainly grateful you edited it down to the best bits for us. Something Blair Witch about it, what with the commentary and all.

I once spent three months at the Grand Canyon (work related). If you hike along the rim there you see plenty of trees blasted by lightning but you don't necessarily realise just how often big angry storms happen there. On three occasions I found myself miles from anywhere right in the middle of sudden thunder storms and several times saw lightning hit the ground within a couple of hundred yards of where I was. Nowhere to hide: you just keep going and make it or don't make it.

Quite exciting.

Cheers - C

Ceri, it was crazy though. I'm sure you've seen similar stuff. But there was a point where it looked like the sky was a bunch of paparazzi getting a look at some dumb bimbo. Just constant flashing. There was also a decent sized section of a tree downed, blocking the street to get out for half the neighborhood. My brother and I got out and moved it. It was probably 6 inches thick and maybe 30 feet long, taking up the whole road and both ditches on either side. Luckily, there was a branch that stuck out at the point where it broke and it acted as a handle to us.

Also, I had a better camera, but I wasn't concerned about that. Just used what I had on me.

Also, there was tons more commentary. But it was a bunch of funny stuff, and you guys seem really serious here. :P

I was in the derecho that hit the BWCA in northern Minnesota in 1999. I was south of the "real" wind, just barely. IIRC 25 million trees fell in the BWCA alone. Even though the soil is almost all sand the rain was so intense it couldn't drain away.

I have never seen cloud to cloud lightning like we had in that storm. The back side of the storm was so charged up that for at least a half hour it never got dark, even for a second. Without the lightning it might as well have been midnight instead of noon.

Derechos are scary storms.
