Did you guys know that these two folks grip the pick kinda weird? Steve Morse uses thumb index and middle so does Eddie and he often just grips it thumb/middle for tapping and stuff leaving his index free for that.

Anyway i've had problems with my picking hand, think it's a form of dystonia and when i do a lot of fast picking hard strumming i tend to lose my grip a bit on the pick. i don't drop it but it feels as though it's moving a bit and i might drop it if i don't reposition my fingers a bit.

So i watched a video of Steve Morse and i thought about adding my middle finger to support the index so that the gripping is more secure and won't tend to slip as easy. So far it's good but it takes a bit of getting used to after playing thumb/index forever

When i first started playing guitar thumb with the two other fingers was how i naturally gripped the pick but then after becoming more educated i moved to the coventional technique.

Anybody else grip their picks weird?

I hold it with my thumb and middle finger and have my index finger just touching the edge.

George Harrison and Chet Atkins used their thumbs and middle fingers too.

I broke my index finger on my right hand (my picking hand) a couple of years into playing, and instead of laying off, I switched to using my thumb and middle finger. Eventually it felt pretty comfortable, but as soon as my index finger was strong enough, I switched back. I guess I'm most comfortable that way.

My tremolo picking is faster going thumb-middle but my strumming is weaker and I have poorer control.

Hi strings, yeah it feels more cumbersome using the two fingers along with the thumb. More awkward for arpeggios and intricate stuff like that but more secure and doesn't feel as if the pick will slip the same.

Just read Floyd's comment as well, yeah the control feels poorer, though i think if i use it all the time it'll come together ok. I wouldn't use it if everything was ok but my picking hand is problematic.

I was amazed to see the way EVH does it 8)
