Pedro:

There are some great sources for learning the guitar out there. One of the best is Learn and Master Guitar (http://www.learnandmaster.com/guitar/). This 20 DVD course takes you from having never touched a guitar, through music reading, basic chords, bar chords, pentatonic scales, fingerstyle, and much more). All of this is covered bit by bit in a very comfortable manner. It is one of the best courses available. It is approximately $149.

Another great resource is the online site Jamplay.com. It costs $20 a month for a subscription but there is a LOT of content there. Just about everything that you would want to learn on the guitar is covered and probably by more than one of their many instructors.

There are a couple of nice books from Musicians Institute that are pretty good if you want to go that way. My favorites are Rhythm Guitar The Complete Guide by Bruce Buckingham & Eric Pascal, and Music Reading for Guitar by David Oakes. Both are great books. Unfortunately there are no accompanying videos so they might be a little too difficult to go at without someone to guide you over the rough spots.

There is also an online site by Justin Sandercoe (http://www.justinguitar.com) that covers the basics of guitar. It is not as good as Learn and Master Guitar or Jamplay but it will teach you to play your basic chords and at least it is FREE so at least you get what you pay for so to speak.

There are other resources but for me, the L&M Guitar and Jamplay are the standouts. Good luck!

Welcome to the Forum pedro.marks. All of the information given so far will work. I do like the free Fender lessons.

Find a bassist and a drummer and form a starter band. (Other willing beginners) You will learn much about what your "Online" lessons are teaching you and a ton more that you can never get from lessons. Basic 3 chord stuff and 1 chord jams teaches much about timing and "Listening" and its great fun! Check the EGO's at the door. It will be a while for that!
Take some theory for sure. Don't miss that. It's a must. Many people find out they can memorize songs beginning to end but may not know why a chord or scale is relevant. Its a hard habit to break being a monkey see monkey do kind of musician. There's a better way and it's knowing some at least, theory. Get past basic minors and majors, past basic scales. It will be cool to know stuff believe me. If at all possible take school band when still in school. They teach all you need to know about theory and timing and making music for free. Just apply to favourite instrument. I'm 51, been playing guitar and sax and bass and drums and blues harp since the late 60's early 70's and I still practice a lot when not gigging much and a little when I have too many late night gigs. Gigs are good as practice I say. Good luck.

Hi Pedro. I have found Youtube to be a great resource for free lessons. You can search for many styles and genres of music if you want to go the self taught route. Happy practicing. :)

me and a friend just sat down and played and played we never had any books and i never had the internet then both of us are completly self tought

best thing i can say is go to you local music store and ask for a book
or you could go to google and type in "good books for learning guitar" or somthing along those line

but like i said you dont need to get book or use the internet or lessons you could just sit down for a few hours a day and play like me and my buddy did
you'll probally develope you own style faster that way and you can try stuff in unorthodox way for what ever feels comfortable to you without having it in your head your doing it wrong

one example is how i hold my pick every one always comments that its weird but its what i find comfortable

I have used Jamplay, Justinguitar, YouTube, and various other sites to teach myself. I like Jamplay a lot because there is a lot of info in one place, and I can pick and choose lessons.
Unfortunately, there is a monthly fee. Much of the same info can be found for free elsewhere if you don't want to plunk down the cash. Once I learned a few things, I picked an easy song (tabs off the internet) and taught myself to play it. It's more fun than just following a lesson plan.
