Strangely, I am of the opinion that they were at their best beginning right after Pepper, and to the end. It seems like John was not taking as much acid, even if he was doing plenty of other things. They stopped relying as much on strings and studio tricks. It seemed to more or less start with "Lady Madonna". (right when there were many rumors flying around about them breaking up).

"Let It Be" has a lot of moments, but as far as good (should be great) studio albums, "Abbey Road" and "The White Album" are IMO some of the greatest of all times. Lennon analyzed the White LP well in saying they were supporting each other doing their own thing. Revolution 9 should have been left off, but John was John. "Abbey Road" is absolute studio magic right before a crack up. It absolutely amazes me that they did it so well, and then kaput! It shows what The Beatles and George Martin could do (Geoff Emerick deserves credit too). Really too good of a team to break up. But business got in the way, and John and Paul had really hard core personalities I think (even though Paul could bury it to be a team player).

The Beatles are the greatest . They will be mentioned hundreds of years from now in the same sentance with Mozart, Beethoven etc. I dig all there stuff from the beginning to the end. The solo stuff was okay but all 4 together, there is nothing ever better!

I'd have to say from Revolver (a great album) to the White Album. They were pretty much a solo band after that. Not that it wasn't good stuff. But all colaboration was gone.
I have to agree with Chris, the Beatles were more then a rock band, they were a social phenomenon. They'll be talking about the Beatles long after rock goes the way of the dinosaur. You can't discuss 20th century history without mentioning them.

This is the second ancient thread dredged up in as many days but I'll bite. I can't name a favourite Beatle album no more than I can name a favourite Beatle song.As far as I'm concerned each Beatle album was beyond anything else of the time and they were the sole reason that I pursued a career in music.I can't see how someone can hate the Beatles as there wasn't anything hateful about their music. All their melodies and harmonies were/are the benchmark against which most musicians have been judged during and since their heyday. No entertainers since have garnered the Universal recognition and caused such a musical tsunami as The British Invasion. We will never see their likes again.
