i'm done with our band. at my age and talent level, i'm about 99% sure this will be my last. i'm cool with that. if i may i'd like to explain why.
in the last 3 years we've added, maybe, 6 new tunes to the set list. i'm the only one who ever suggests anything new. when i say new, i mean stuff from the 70's other than the current standards we do from the same (era?). i wish i had Mr. Ceri's writing skills. anyway, i've always thought it was better to discuss, as a band, what tunes were sleepers and should be dropped for something new and better. when i say better, i mean something that gets folks dancing or at least on thier feet. selfishly, i enjoy seeing folks dance. i can't, thats why i play guitar, or at least attempt to.
we practice late on sundays. sometimes this is my only day off. i can promise you this wouldn't bother me at all if it were necessary. we play the same stuff, make the same mistakes and just carry on like nothing is awry. whats the point? i love these guys very, very much but i'm done with it.

am i being a selfish, arrogant spoiled rotten horses arse? i know that i am an a-holorama but i get bored very easy. especially with music.

thanks everyone. i hope at least 1 person has been in my situation. i make no money playing music. i do it for fun and hope someone listening is having fun. it ain't fun no more.

signed, whiny beastard.

As far as I'm concerned that is when you call it quits.

If it's not "fun" anymore, don't do it! Life is too short to do otherwise. When the day ends, it's all about you and your family and when the day begins, be thankful you and your loved ones woke up also.

Everything else is "Gravy".

Maybe your the problem and your band mates are right! Lead by example. Bring something new to the table and show the bass player the notes. And go from there.

As you all know, bands are a strange concoction. It's not good to have too many chiefs, it's also not good not to have a chief. Sounds like you need to provide some friendly guidance. It might work for a while. Beats playing to yourself in the bedroom. If it doesn't, then by all means, exit gracefully.

As a band, you should always be learning new songs. It keeps things fresh....

That is pretty whiny JB,
Stop playing because you're whiny at the moment isn't as bad as how mad you'll be at yourself when you start playing again after losing all that playing time because you were whiny.
Good vibrations Bro. You not putting out your good talent vibes means less good vibes for the world. The world needs all of the good vibes available. Don't be selfish?

I can understand where you're coming from, but I don't agree with you're solution. Quiting is never the answer.

The way I see it, there's 5 of us in our band. With all things equal, I get my way only 20% of the time. Fortunately we usually see things the same way.

You might try joining up with some different guys for a weekly jam or even joining another band on the side. I received a call the other day from guy (I've never met or heard of the guy) needing a bass player. I've been out of town so I'm returning the call tomorrow. As long as it doesn't interfere with my current band I'll play some gigs with them. Should help to keep things fresh and I'll probably learn a thing or two.

It might be a good idea to sit down with everyone in your band and calmly tell them what you posted here. Possibly a compromise can be agreed on.

hi , i had this problem a few years ago , playing in a band with some old school buddys , anyway long story short i got fed up playing punk (it was good back in the 70's / 80/s) so i quit , then i said to myself i was only going to play stuff i love to play / listen to , tried getting a zappa thing together but couldn'tget many people that were into it , now i have a sweet 3 piece band on the go and i'm loving it ,looking for a singer though , as has been said , if it's no fun jack it in and get something new together , cheers
Alan

bring the new stuff in, challenge them ... and if they really don't want it, you can still quit. your role has to be the one of a motivator, so bring it in a good way.

i quit a band back in the 70's for similar reasons

a school friend asked me to join his band. they were playing weddings and parties- no bars, and that was fine for me. the problem was that they were settling for mediocrity. all were good musicians, but instead of working to get better, they wanted to add a lot of songs, but not put time into playing them properly. i just decided one day that i was not growing, and left the band. this was the last regular gig i had.

it is tough when they are friends and family, but if you aren't happy, it will not be fun. a friend and i are attempting to put something together now. maybe after all these years i'll be ready to play hard again

I agree that if it's not fun, you shouldn't keep doing it. Especially if you're not making any money off of it.

Maybe you can just agree take a break and resume things in a few months -- the time away could help renew everyone's passion for playing.

i'm done with it. nothing will ever change. i have no problem playing with myself. hee hee. you now what i mean. i'm a loner by design. our band was just for fun, very little money if any.
this weeend was our biggest annual gig. no cash. i bailed. i've got 2 trees to clear from the yard. i'd rather spend the weekend in 100 degree heat cutting wood than playing the same old stuff over and over. its boring.
we "could" be so much more entertaining if we tried. i'm the only one who is bored i guess.
thanx everyone. trying to talk about this with non-musicians is kinda weird. ya know?
