I think it's sometimes hard for us (as musicians--and guitarists, specifically) to gauge why a band is popular or famous, as well as what the "best" music of a particular genre, era or band may be.

When somebody says, "Oh man, Artist X is the greatest guitar player in the world!", we often think, "Man, they must not know about 'Obscure Guitarist' or 'Obscure Guitarist 2'..."

For example, most of us are going to (at least) be aware of John McLaughlin's guitar playing or Jaco Pastorius' bass playing; the general music consumer is not (not that I particularly like those artists' music, but we can all agree they have/had great ability).

So when somebody says, "Artist X was the best", we have to think what they are basing their opinion upon--their enjoyment of his music, not his actual guitar playing/songwriting/singing ability. We (as musicians) also have artists we enjoy/admire/emulate who aren't necessarily great from a technical point of view, too--(Hound Dog Taylor, Keith Richards and Waylon Jennings are amongst my favorite guitarists, and none of them were even the best guitarist in their own bands!).

Are the Beatles the "best" band ever? Well, that's too subjective to answer and there's too many variables to calculate.

Are they the most "famous" band in the world? Probably, because my nine-year-old daughter's friends all know and dig their music...they don't know 90% of the other bands of the 1960s, but they know John-Paul-George-Ringo.

Also, if any discussion of the 1960s (politically, socially, culturally) comes up, the Beatles are almost always mentioned on some level.

So the anwer is, "Yes, the Beatles are the most famous band in the world."

But give me ZZ Top any day.
