"Phony Beatlemania has bitten the dust"... If only.

JS Bach is still more influential on modern music.

Hey, I'm always ready to listen to a Bach fugue. To all you bass players out there. Want a resource for great bass riffs? Bach fugues.

Interesting thought. There are more Elvis impersonators...

that may be so, but probably due to the fact that elvis was much more of a character.... you know sideburns, pomp hair-do, and a sequened cowboy suit... everyone knows who you're trying to look like... whether you really do or not is another story.
beatles, on the other hand, you have to do it through music and the complexity and variety of beatles songs compared to elvis... not even close.

beatles - hands down... and fame's got nothing to do with it.
eleanor rigby is one of my favorites... pure artistry. the string section in that song is outrageous!

Wow SK,you certainly dug back in the archives to find this one.I'd say that even despite their longevity the Stones never attained the worldwide aacceptance and fame the Beatles did. While there are quite a number of people who could take or leave the Stones or flat out don't like them, the Beatles achieved an almost universal degree of adulation. People who are indifferent or don't like the Stones far outweigh The Beatles detractors. The Stones however are the only group that has come close to the Beatles level of fame.

I don't know why people are even bringing up Zeppelin.

I know people who have never listened to Zeppelin, but have never met a single person who hasn't heard a single Beatles song.

The Beatles are more famous than any other band in large part due to their timing: TV became much more common, Rock and Roll was no longer quite so controversial, and rock hadn't fragmented into a few dozen different genres.

The Rolling Stones would be second place... even though they are "still around", they usually aren't as "top of mind" as the Beatles are.

I think the best thing that could have ever happened to the Beatles was breaking up. I doubt anybody would've liked what disco-era Beatles would have looked like... I'd probably say the same thing about Zeppelin too -- based upon the bootleg I heard of their final show, I think everyone needed to take a break and sober up a bit.

I doubt if the Beatles would have jumped on the disco band wagon as none of them put out any disco influenced stuff as a single artist except maybe for Paul who came close with Movin' Up.John,George and Ringo were too individualistic to be influenced or swayed by outside sources so I doubt that as a group they'd go disco.I can see John however spoofing it to ridicule it.

I should have been a bit clearer...I doubt they would have gone disco, but they probably would've toned things down to "cheezy music in the background at a wine bar/fern bar".

My hat is absolutely off to The Beatles. Each fantastic musicians, but with a key ingredient thrown in to the pot: all 4 members could sing, and damn well at that.

The voice of John Lennon is what sticks out for me, among his innumerable talents. When I think of him singing, I think of a small tube amp. Turn up the volume and you get natural, organic sounding overdriven tone.

Although Paul tackled the bluesy wailers like Oh Darling,John had the most soulful voice when he put his heart into it especially like on This Boy,when he hits the high part in the chorus of that song it would bring goosebumps out on a statue.

That is precisely the song I had in mind, guitslinger. I always find myself having to turn that part up. Hands down of my favorites.

To the reader: If you haven't yet heard "This Boy", it is my humble recommendation to have a listen:

Thanks for putting up the link Tornado, there's also a video somewhere on youtube of Sean Lennon,Rufus Wainwright and some other guy doing it too and Sean hits the high notes with the same emotion and angst that John did and needless to say the audience goes wild when he hits it.
