Gary, I saw them in late October 1968, a little over a month after seeing the Jimi Hendrix Experience, cough cough. Johnny Winters trio wasn't too shabby either. My Brother musicians and I debated about rock and roll groups at that time, always then. But, your thread so your opinion counts, I step down. I remember listening to Wheels of Fire in an audio booth at a record store on Sunset Strip the day it was released in Cali, and I was truly amazed.
Here is a treat:

Cream - Deserted Cities of the Heart

I bought that album riding my bike home from Little League practice from a 7-11 store for $.99 in La Puente California and I can't remember the year. 68-70. I was 10-12 years old and stared at that album cover for day's. :D

Born under a bad sign.

Well You thought the leaden winter would bring you down forever,
But you rode upon a steamer to the violence of the sun.
And the colours of the sea bind your eyes with trembling mermaids,
And you touch the distant beaches with tales of brave Ulysses,
How his naked ears were tortured by the sirens sweetly singin',
Sparkling waves are calling you to touch a white laced lip.
You see your girl's brown body dancing through the turquoise,
And her footprints make you follow where the sky loves the sea.
And when your fingers find her, she drowns you in her body,
Carving deep blue ripples in the tissues of your mind.
Tiny purple fishes run laughing to your finger,
You want to take her with you to the hard land of the winter.
Her name is Aphrodite and she rides a crimson shell,
You know you cannot leave her for you touched the distant sands
With tales of brave Ulysses, how his naked ears were tortured
By the sirens sweetly singing.
Tiny purple fishes run lauging through your fingers,
You want to take her with you to the hard land of the winter.
