Does The Grateful Dead's "American Beauty" count as obscure?

While I'm sure the Grateful Dead doesn't count as an obscure band, I don't think any of their albums were particularly big sellers.

I am sure that Pink Floyd "Animals" DOESN"T count as an obscure classic!

I have already transferred a few Be Bop Deluxe albums to CDR. I agree that they are obcure classics.

The Pavlov's Dog mention is a good reminder that I ought to put them on my "to transfer" list. My next transferring project will probably be Angel City (known as The Angels in Australia and non-USA locales). I have a lot of vinyl! (Thousands)

I'm not sure how it rates on the overall obscurity level, but an album that I wish that I still had is Alone Together by Dave Mason (and an all star cast) I want the original, multicoloured lp with the fold out cover....I used to have it, but somehow it disappeared from my collection many years ago

The first UK Punk album. (Feb '76)

I like how Captain Sensible (bottom left) tries to maintain his dignity  ... and the music's great too.

What can you tell me about this? If it's a classic, I'll have to look it up!

Little Feat- Sailin Shoes. While not exactly a rock classic The songs invoke some great memories. Interestingly the cover art for this album was done by the same artist (Neon Park) that did the cover for The Mothers "Weasels ripped my Flesh". Lowell George was a one time member of The Mothers until Frank fired him...

Poco- Pickin up the Pieces. 1st album from Jim Messina and Richie Furay after they left Buffalo Springfield. This band is partly responsible for the "country rock" genre that evolved in the early 70s. Many one time members of this band have gone on to bigger careers with other bands.

So what albums from your collection are obscure classics?

Ah, nice thread, orville.

Far as LPs are concerned, I have four albums from British post-punk band Magazine, of which I guess the closest to a "classic" (not sure how close) might be their third record, The Correct Use of Soap.

Image

The little nugget I have to share is that I was given their four original albums by their drummer, John Doyle, back in about 80 or 81 - when I was his drum teacher for a few months. Strange but true.

Far as obscure is concerned, that's probably in the eye of the beholder. Just the other day I discovered that a young gentleman had never even heard of JJ Cale's album Really, which to my own taste is a massively important all-time classic of far reaching influence (on the likes of Clapton, Knopfler and beyond). I had the pleasure of passing that "obscure" album on to a new generation: a job worth doing, to my mind.

Cheers - C

It was recorded by four of my friends in a local band in Fort Lauderdale, FL, in 1971-1972. A very low budget production. The band had a fifth player about a year before they cut the album. A keyboard player that they had a falling out with. He was one of the original members, that was too bad. Very Alice Cooper sound for the time. Not that bad. The band split up when the bass player got drafted into the army in the summer of 1972. They played through some monster Acoustic Amps. A lead singer, lead guitar, bass, and drums made up Bolder Damn on the album. Good friends gone.

would have to be `friends - The Beach Boys` for me. Im a big Brian Wilson fan and this is one of the albums made pretty much (save a song or two) without him once brian had...erm.. left the building (or was at least hiding in the cupboard). Considering that, i was amazed that it ended up being one of my favourite albums.

Some of the most sublime and innocent sounding music ive ever heard, hardly a party album, but if its sunny, youre on your own pottering around and feeling like the world is a great place then this is the album for the moment. Got me through many lazy summers.

Nice to see the great spirit album `12 dreams of dr sardonicus` mentionned here too.

Spirit - 12 Dreams Of Dr Sardonicus, a great album.
Iron Butterfly - Metamorphosis album didn't get the notoriety it was due in 1970.
