The  was a play on SG aka Solid Guitar.

I am a huge fan of SG's including my Gibson SG and I used to own a Epiphone G-400. Not sure how that headstock broke but considering the number of SG's sold by Epiphone and Gibson I would say that was an anomaly if it happened naturally.

lol the 'SG' thing went right over my.... head

as far as the broken headstock, I spent a fair amount of time over at the Gibson/Epi forums, and it's unfortunately not an anomaly. It's not like the heads just go flying off when sitting on the guitar stand, but if you drop one of those it's way more likely to lose its head vs. a strat. It's definitely a known issue with Gibsons and Epiphones in general (not just SG's) so be careful with yours.

Here's a quote from a user on the Gibson forum in a thread about broken headstocks:

I swear to god, im just waiting for some **** fender lover to come in and start preaching about how awesome Fenders are because cases like this never happen...

**** FENDER LOVERS, THE REASON YOU NEVER SEE SOMETHING LIKE THIS IS BECAUSE YOU HAVE BOLT ON NECKS!

***** they piss me off so **** much.

Another thing to keep in mind with a Gibson or Epi is the stellar customer service when something does go wrong ... a quote from the same thread:

I have also contacted Gibson so far have not bothered to answer my emails. So much said for the name Gibson. I won't buy another. Just as well have gone out and purchased a copy or an Epiphone at least these necks are made of Maple.
Repair is going to be around 150 to £200. For a problem that was there waiting to go in the first place.
Not at all happy with the Gibson brand. I should have purchased a Fender instead.

That's a funny quote, because it's not entirely true. Fender headstocks don't have a break-angle for string tension like some other guitars do. Ibanez guitars are extremely notorious for headstocks breaking in that area. Not only is there and angle to them, the necks are shaped thinner as well, and there are 2-holes drilled in that spot for Floyd locking nuts.

So when a Guitar with that break-angle takes a dive, that's the spot that usually takes the abuse because the tip of the headstock hits first. On a Fender, it's more likely to hit the back of all of the tuners at once causing less of a shock. People may frown on string trees here and there, but I'd rather have a couple of those on my headstock, than a broken headstock later down the road.

It doesn't mean I don't have Ibanez and Gibson guitars (or others with that angle). But I am usually very careful with all of my guitars. I think I may have a only a few guitar dives from a stand falling over in the past 20 something years.

yeah I think the bolt-on comment was just an attempt at a dig at Fender. The break angle is indeed the 'problem'.
