Is there a free computer software that I can use to slow down a backing track without changing its pitch or quality? I want to do a record with my electric guitar but the backing track I found is a bit too fast for my level. And I prefer playing it slower for this particular song anyways.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

+1 on Audacity (it's free).

Believe-it-or-not, Windows Media Player can do it (and it doesn't change the pitch!):

1. Open the file in Windows Media Player

2. Click the View menu, point to Enhancements, and select Play Speed Settings.

The default setting 1.0 is normal speed, .5 is half speed I think.

In regard to playing backing tracks in Audacity, a nice feature is that you can add some metronome-like beats to the beginning of an already-recorded backing track. Then you can save that version and export it as an mp3... I use that feature all the time.

Anytime! So many cool features built right into Windows.

That's a great idea, you can also loop the section of a song you are practicing so you don't have to keep reloading the file (copy and paste). Audacity is the best! Feel free to check out my YouTube page in my sig for some examples of what can be done with Audacity and backing tracks....

Duane Allman would put his turntable on the floor and play barefoot, controlled the album speed with his big toe!! Gotta love simplicity.

Apple Quicktime Pro does it. And VLC.

Cheers
