The length of time it takes is entirely dependant on how long it takes a person to know for sure that they will stick with guitar and not let it go to waste by poking it in a closet. What guitar you pick is entirely subjective too because that depends on the genres of music you choose to play and what guitar would be most suited for these genres.

I have bought five guitars in the last two weeks. Play some gigs, buy a guitar. Look for used bargains. Play some more gigs, buy another guitar.

I think in about 1980, after a decade hiatus from playing, I actually bought three guitars in one year - Ovation Viper III, Ovation Custom Balladeer A/E and a Tele bass. They were my second, third and fourth and I still own them. I didn't buy another guitar until the mid-90s, then I started acquiring them a little faster.

There are a lot of very nice used guitars out there right now - my second to last was a 2006 MIM Stratocaster in Vintage White with H-S-S pickup configuration, almost perfect condition - $180 (two gigs). It was just hanging there, begging to go home with me.

It's hard to resist when they look at you as you walk by and then they get all wiggly when you look back at 'em.

If I read your question correctly, presumably the "second guitar" comes after your first-ever guitar. As as novice you need to take a fair bit of time (at least nine months) to learn what you like and don't like about the first guitar and let that be your guide.

If you like the first guitar, make the second choice one to compliment, not duplicate, the first. Different model, different pick-ups, etc. However, one area that you may wish to duplicate, if you like the first guitar, is playability. I.E. neck shape, scale length, fret board.

300 Million $$ and you'd be looking at butchered strats? :?

My first phone call would be to the Fender Custom shop and the next call would be to the airport so I could get there. Oh, and I'd make Alain le France an offer he couldn't refuse for his Fender "Jaguar Cars" Strat..

Speaking from experience, it really matters what your first guitar was. Mine was a Strat, so I went and got an SG. See I believe every well rounded musician needs a Strat-style axe, a Les Paul-style axe, and an acoustic. But if you wanna stick to Fender, look in the used department of your store. GC usually has Strats and Teles starting at $199 and up that aren't too shabby, and dont forget to take advantage of Epiphone's fine selection.

Well, pretty simple:

As soon as you either think your first guitar SUCKS or you think "I'm good enough now to check out other styles and sounds".

Worst decision: "I can't play, I'll never learn it anyway but what else could I do with my money????"

Kidding aside: if you don't like your guitar, buy a second one!
If you love it: play it as long as you can!

If your taste changes: buy another one!

If you get better and look for another sound: buy another one

If you're addicted to strats: buy as many as you can!

If you're sick of all your strats: send them to me! (PM me for address!)

And a Floyd Rose axe.
