Like the title says :|

Being a mayer fan I pre ordered this newest album "Born and Raised"
but rite out of the case I was not digging it....... so I try to give it time to see if it will grow on me and well its not going to happen. I hate to say it but its boring.....
I was hoping for something similar to "Continuum" or a John Mayer Trio thing.
this album just does not move me at all, well except to lift my arm to hit the Skip button  and there is not enough Strat :!: Booooooo

I just had to share

I like it a lot. The guy is evolving as an artist. The album is very solid musically and the songwriting is very good. His playing is spot on and the layering on the music just sounds great IMO. And I used to be a strict JM hater until I discovered Continuum and really gave Where The Light Is a good listen. The new album seems to me as if JM is growing up and writing more mature music. But I see how people would dislike it if they were hoping for another Continuum or were hoping for more blues type stuff and guitar solos.

I've been a Mayer fan for a while now and I've learned to try not to judge the music from the album. It sounds crazy, but he's a live guy to the core, and some of the songs you might hate otherwise really take on a new life in concert. He's very meticulous and calculating, and from someone who craves more blues and face melting solos (I'm with you there), the end result is that the album seems like a watered down version of what it could be. On the other hand, as an artist he might alienate some of his fan base if he put out a twelve bar blues.

With all of that in mind, I liked the album more than I thought I would. It's definitely mellow, but I just accept it for what it is. It's a folky departure from his prior direction, which at this point I welcome because I think Battle Studies was his least "authentic" and cohesive work to date. I think Queen of California and Born and Raised show mastery in a genre that he just now made his way into. Backing vocals from Crosby and Nash certainly help. But I think those are the greatest complete products on the album, especially from a songwriting perspective. He also does some interesting things melodically on tracks like If I Ever Get Around to Living (granted, I liked it before it was an actual song http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VHI5W6Z56CE).

If nothing else it's interesting to watch artists develop, whether I love the direction or not. I've tried to stop viewing albums as the end all be all. I think too often we get an album in hand and since we've been waiting so long we treat it as final. If the popular audience doesn't like it, they decide they don't like that artist anymore, period. But musicians, like any other artists, work in stages according to current influences. There is no reason to attach too much to any one product. This album, more than others, seems like a rest stop on a long road trip of a career. He started writing it right after Battle Studies, and he is presumably writing again right now since he can't sing with his throat condition. If anything, I'm sort of excited to see what's next. Continuum might have been the peak, but I'm still along for the ride.

I badly want the (Trio) Mayer, Pino and Steve to do a complete new 10+ song album and come to Texas more than 10 times  all 3 of them together is magic in my opinion.
I Hope this happens one day and I will never cease to be a Mayer fan :P

We can only hope. I think it's possible. It just requires a lot of things to happen all at once. Mayer has to get in both a bluesy and risk-taking mood (Trio formation is tough stuff), he has to have no new solo album to record or tour for, and Steve and Pino have to be available and not touring or recording with some legend like Clapton as they're known to do. No idea how it happened the first time around but the fact that it did means it's just as possible for a repeat.

I've never been a big fan of John Mayer, but I think this is his best album yet. A real 70's feel to it without sounding dated. I also agree Mayer is more of a live artist than a recording artist.

I feel the same way. I've just heard parts of the new album, but I like it. And that's more than I can say for some of his others. I'm not a hater, I just never have gotten into his music. But I like him 70's folky better than I like him playing pop songs with SRV licks sprinkled in. Just my opinion though, I have lots of friends who might never have gotten into listening to blues had it not been for Mayer stating who his influences have been. I've got to give him credit for that.

I got to sample parts of this new one, a buddy has it in his car.
I have to say that it doesn't do anything for me.
I will pass.
