It offers 8 mic inputs, and it records to 8 tracks at same time :o (if you want it to  )- records to SD-card ,is portable, even works as a DAW controller/sound card.
I really consider buying one . Most for recording drums at different locations (have experienced that multitrack recording is the best way of doing that...) But also for recording gigs and rehearsals.
-and , of course , it could be handy to just be able to lay down some quick tracks in the living room , without having to start up a computer.
I usually use logic pro(9)
Happy to hear your opinions :)

I use the R16.......it has 8 inputs also. No complaints so far..........and better than the Boss ones of the similar pricepoint.

Any particular reason for going for the 24 over the 16?. My band uses the 16 to record live, in the home studio and just for recording 'stuff' absolutely brilliant for less than £300!!

The particular reason is that iI could probably get one used - near half the price of a new one :D
But if I don't get it , I will certainly consider the R16 ! But the price gap ain't so big . But if I remember correctly , the R24 offers phantom power to 6 inputs - vs 2 for the 16

yup, so that is probably better for drums I guess, we just use a small kids kit  so just have a couple of overheads and a bass mic which does us.....but the onboard mics are pretty awesome! Stick it in the centre of a room, hit record, and just play away....I don't know if it has some sort of onboard filters or what have you but that does a great job for recording ideas and demos!

Pappawookee- I find your comment inspiring and encouraging 8)
I think the 24 have got some onboard effects/filters. Probably useful at least for sketching out ideas...
But I also hope it is easy to transfer tracks into the mac/logic for further treatment

Hi,
I also use the R16 and like it very much. I considered the R24 at the time I purchased the R16, but thought that I didn't need the extra channels (and phantom power). It does have many onboard effects (guitar, bass, microphone, mixing) which can be further modified if you wish.
I have exported my tracks to my pc (not a Mac, not yet!) into programs such as Goldwave and the Cubase that comes bundled with the Zoom recorder and this has worked very well. It's easy to do via the usb link and I don't see why it should be a problem for the Mac.
Great recorder, and as Pappawookee says, the onboard microphones do a good job of recording when you have an idea, but don't want to mess about setting up various microphones. The only thing that I wish it had is a pitch control like my old Fostex 4 track tape deck.
cheers,
Alex

Hi, Alex!
Your input makes me more determined to get one R16, or preferably R24 !
And I hope you get a mac soon ! I don't miss messing around with PC/Cubase ! I find Mac/Logic a lot more easy and reliable to use , and I guess the Zoom will make things even more simple

Hey actually, check out my page on reverb nation......Atriptyc......that two track s were done straight into the onboard mics and then, for some bizarre reason, drums were aded later, but we messed about with effects just for laughs.........that's just half an hour messing with it.

Now I have been listening to Atriptyc. Thanks for sharing! Nice songs. And if that were from the onboard mics , it was pretty good ! Drums sounded OK, as well.
Just now I am waiting for a call or mail from the dude who wants to sell his r24. If I don't get it , I am pretty sure that I am going to buy a new one - might as well be from Thomann :)
Ps-@Alex : I 've also got a Fostex 280 (if I remember it right) It has nat been used for years. i was very satisfied with it - but I can't remember if it had a pitch control. Perhaps I did never use it
...then that one should be no worry...

Hi asgeirman,
I'm going to get a Mac eventually...I'm stuck in the "I've been using pc's for so long that I'm afraid that I won't be able to get all my programs to work on a Mac" frame of mind! My sister just got a Mac recently and she loves it, so I should do it as well....
My Fostex is the X-15 series II multitracker - a compact 4 tracker which requires type II cassette tapes (or type IV, but they're harder to erase of course) , but these are difficult to find nowadays.
I'll bet you know this already, but you can download and look at the R24 manual from the Zoom website to check out the various features. There's a bit of a learning curve, but it's not too difficult.
I first got a Zoom H4n portable digital recorder and was very pleased with it. I use it for field recordings and it has a superb stereo image. This led me to the R16 when I took early retirement and decided to start playing my guitars again and wanted more i/p's than my Fostex had. I'm slowly adding to my home recording studio, but what I need is a bigger space! This may mean I'll have to try to find a job!!
Pappawookee...I hadn't noticed the autotune on the R16...I'll have to dig out the manual! I have used the pitch shifter which is nice, but it is in semitones. What I'd like is a variable control so that I could compensate for slightly out of tune tracks.
best,
Alex

Yes- now it's confirmed- I'll get my R24 sent! The first deal went down the drain, but another popped up shortly after-almost as cheap. But I think this one is newer- from december-11. And I get the original payment receipt, and thereby the guarantee . :D Just have to wait a couple of days......
Yes , Alex- I remember those x-15s. Think they are a bit newer than my 280.
And I have not downloaded the manual , yet - think I am going to play cowboy first- and try to find out of it without using the manual. But-I admit it is most likely that I have to surrender, and read the book
I have a Zoom H2. I am very satisfied with that. A band borrowed it for a gig , and released a cd with the takes from it. Tomorrow I am going to record a concert of a band that I used to be a part of earlier with the H2. Since they asked me to do it 8)
I'm not sure if I would be satisfied w early retirement if I had to work..... No keep your studio small
(...having moved out of the main bedroom , to place studio/guitars there, and sleeping in a smaller room  )
When it comes to Mac- yes- it was a bit difficult to get into the Mac , used to think windows/structure,. I was thinking too complicated! But soon I learned to appreciate the simplicity of it. And as soon as I installed MS Office for Mac, I did not miss my PC anymore. Try your sisters Garageband ! It comes with every Mac and is superb!

Image[/img] Back again
Took a bit more time to get it than expected - but it came :D
Have not got the time to test it out proper ,yet - but I find it very comfortable to sit in the sofa , put on the headphones- grab my acoustic or dobro and just lay down multiple tracks using the built-in mics without having to rig anything else!
So what I have done so far, is testing out the unit itself- have not connected it to mac/logic yet. Plans for that during weekend.
It seems to work without problems - sounds really good . Perhaps some minor hiss in preamps, when cranked up. No issue. If I want it dead silent, I'll try to use another outboard pre I've got.
Not too impressed by the guitar effects/amp- simulations. But they can be usable. Perhaps I'm spoilt  Got a couple of good amps that I intend to mike up. And I really like many of the amp/pedal-simulations in Logic , so I prefer doing it that way...
But I am overall very satisfied -especially the way it handled my upright piano. Just placed it on top of that , armed the built-in mics and recorded! Easy way of getting a nice sound. (Would not have believed that - would think that was to much vibration , but- apparently not)
So as a standalone unit it is great , but I intend to use it in collaboration w my computer- I think that will ease up some operations/editing - or I know that :)

Cheers- it's Friday

I agree with you about the guitar effects and amp simulations...some are ok, but not spectacular. Check out hangul...it's a reversing effect and is in the MIC algorithms on my R16. I used it on a couple of recordings with my acoustic guitar and achieved something of a bagpipe sound which was very pleasing to my scottish soul 8)
I'll have to try the piano technique, though our piano is a yamaha electric which we purchased when we were living in a 2nd floor apartment which had no lift other than our legs and arms.
The only odd behaviour that I've noticed with the R16 (only twice in a year and a half) is that a track distorts...volume shifts and breaks up.....don't quite know why yet. Each of the two times this has happened, I've deleted the bad track and rerecorded it without any problem, other than timing
I've not used it directly into my computer yet, rather I transfer the tracks into CuBase (or Goldwave) and mix them there. I've also mixed a lot of my recordings using the mastering function on the Zoom, but it's nice to have other mixing software (and a better GUI).
I also like the colour...grey and silver?
Nice tele, by the way.....
Enjoy your weekend...I'm sure you'll find something to do.... :)

Hi , Alex!
I'll have closer look at hangul and others :) I can dig a bagpipe
You might try the pianothing- but since it is electric, I would have done it with cables into your r16.
I have fortunately not experienced those volume-shifts - and I hope not to !
The color is like you said grey and silver. Very nice. As the tele is a sweetie :D My go-to guitar right now !
Thanks for the salutation - Yes I got plenty possibilities this weekend- and on top of it I plan go to a local blues festival - situated outdoors on an island outside the city. Some local artists, and some english - and at least one american - Dana Fuchs (Don't mis-spell the name 8) )
But it is rainy here right now - so I will see tomorrow.

Have some fun in the weekend :)
