I just finished having a go at my Jimmie Vaughn Strat with the Ernie Ball 8-38s that I put on just a couple of days ago.The intonation was way way off,so much so that when you played a C chord that sounded in tune and a D,the strings sounded incredibly out of tune on the D chord. With the D'Addario 8-38s I had the intonation set up spot on to the closest possible settings but with the Ernie Balls they are too far out to be of any good whatsoever. I have never encountered intonation to be so far off, especially with strings that were almost identical in gauge except for the 2nd and 3rd strings where one 2nd is a 10 and the other an 11 and where one 3rd is a 14 and the other is a 15.Has anyone else found intonation so far off on gauges of string sets that were so close?

@Guitslinger - maybe it's down to that difference in guage, especially as you're dealing with such light strings in the first place, where any variation in the pressure you apply will bend the note - the more so at the lower frets like in your D chord?

Even though we're discussing "which strings, brands, models and gauges", does
anyone ever consider changing nuts when moving up or down with string guages?

PLMK. Thank you. Toppscore 8)

I'm having zero problems with my Hwy 1 strat and GHS 40-8.5's. But, it took over a week for the guitar to settle in enough to fine tune it. At first, it sounded like poop (intonation issues, string rattle, mushy strings), but now it sounds...right n' tight, and it's much easier to play. I'm bonding with the guitar more now than I have in the past. I loved it before, but really, really, REALLY love it now with the 40-8.5's on it!

No problem changing between guitars with heavier gauges and flatter necks neither.

im not a fan of slinkies either. i dont know what strings i have at the mo, i dont really pay much attention as i dont notice a huge amount of difference. all i've noticed is that i dont like slinkies, and i thought the fender bullets were really good, but i cant get them locally anymore.

thats all used to buy was fender strings. now they don't seem to be anywhere. kind of a bummer really.

D'Addario heavies for my slide, 10's for most of my others and I have a tele strung with 09's...Acoustics I use D'Adarrio lights on one and John Pearce lights on the other, my resonator I use D'Addario regulars

This. On both my strat (1/2 step down) and Les Paul (standard). Keeps the tension about the same and gives a nice warm tone with lots of punch. Love those things.

Did not know 8.5's existed. Cool. Gotta try them out.
Thanks, RCB. Toppscore 8)
