Full. All the time, every time. (it's a soundmans dream at the desk)

Scooping mids doesn't make for a heavy sound. It makes for a thin sound that accents bass and treble but lacks punch, especially in a live environment. Try it, you'll find a scooped sound doesn't carry past the first three rows of people and that you're quickly drowned out by bass and cymbals.

For metal you want lots of low mids and treble. Not bass and treble.

Plus if you look at the way classic valve amps are wired up, the controls add nothing. They will only detract. The treble diminishes the bass, the bass diminishes the treble. It's the way tonestacks work. Setting everything at half way and going from there doesn't get you the flat sound of the amp. Mid full, bass and treble on zero does. (want to check? Do that on a clean amp, then plug into a everything on 5 set PA. The difference is underwhelming).
Human hearing range is all centered on the middle frequencies.

You have to get used to it. PA systems are geared up differently to guitar amps and need you to present as full bodied a sound as possible. Likewise getting a sound to hit the back wall of the room needs eq more than it needs volume. That is what is meant when you hear the term "cutting through the mix" and why the strat bridge pickup does it so well (it has loads of mids and high end).
On recordings you have to consider that most music is mastered (not mixed) with a big mid frequency scoop by less than adequate mastering houses. It's a problem that started with the advent of CD's and at least 70% of the reason people still buy vinyl. Which never seems to be mastered that way (at least to my knowledge).

I'm more into fuzz than hard distortion. But if I was going for Metal I guess I'd use my Tube Screamer and my nearly 20 year-old DOD Supra Distortion pedal. I've never tried them together. That's about all I've got.

Oh, I've got a Devi Ever pedal that might work, too -- Vintage Fuzz Master

I HIGHLY recommend the Boss ST-2 Power Stack. It has a huge range of distortion tones and cranked, it just drips with high gain fuzz. Sounded way better than the Metal Zone in an A B test.

For getting really heavy distortion I turn the Master on my Marshall JCM 800,2204 stack on 4 and the Volume up full. Then I run my Guild S-100-NB through my 1969 E-H Big Muff Pi and into the amp. This works with my Epi Trad Pro Les Paul and Epi G-400 Les Paul Custom too.

Heavy distortion? Um... I don't really get into that type of sound. But, I will if I have to. I don't have a distortion pedal, but will use the Fender Frontman 65r's channel switch and turn up the gain. It obviously doesn't sound like an overdrive tube amp - that's for sure - but it will give me a solid crunch/distortion tone. I have used the "mid contour" button and don't care for it or the scooped mid type of sound. It sounds like a fly stuck on flypaper to me. By playing with the tone controls, I can sort of get a "Crazy Train" type of vicious, snarling, scooped mid, wicked heavy metal tone. But again, I'm not that into that sound.

The bedroom is not the stage. Get used to hearing your rig with a full sound (no scoop) in the bedroom and then when you do hit the stage and play at gig level volume you'll see what the pros and veterans are talking about. And you'll wonder what you ever saw in scooped mids in the first place.

((You can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink.))

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Mostly my amp. But every once in a while I'll dial in either a tube screamer in combination with the amp or a fuzz. But 90% of the time I use tube saturation.
