Hello

I am new to this forum and I have just recently started to learn to play bass. I have got a Fender squier p-bass 1984 Japan made model. I am able to play some slow tempo songs with my fingers and so far I like the sound I get, but the strings shows signs of wear in some places and I think it is time to change them. The only thing I know is that the strings on it is roundwounds. I dont know how old they are or if the previous owner have ever changed them, but most likely.
Anyway, I dont know anything about strings other than the difference between flatwounds and roundwounds. The tone I am seeking is towards the bass sound in this clip from app. 5:22:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YYpQj5ra4eg. I know there are a lot of other factors that also contributes to the sound but is this a standard precision bass sound?
In a more rock context look at this performance, same band: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mrPlQSS8 ... re=related. If you listen to the bassline, it is a precision bass but can you recommend some roundwound strings that will work well towards achieving this tone?
Is it something called standard roundwounds for p-bass? And they need to fit on my squier p-bass. Second, it might be because I am a beginner, but I get quite a lot of finger noise when playing, and I know there are some roundwounds that makes less finger noise aswell. Will this compromise the tone I am after?
I will be very happy if someone have suggestions/recommendations on this:)

Cheers

Marius

I am not a big bass player, so bass tone is not my forte. but if you want to eliminate finger noise and have a mellow soft tone the fender nylon tape wound strings are excellent. they also reduce fret wear.

but any round core pure nickel string will sound mellow. but someone with more experience in this area may be more help.

marius86, welcome to the Forum!
Roundwound electric bass guitar strings are going to have some finger noise because of the way that they are constructed. Flatwounds won't have that noise at the expense of some clarity of sound, although that may be desirable in some styles of music.
I like D'Addarios, Ernie Ball, DR, Fender and my favorite (unfortunately most expensive as well):
http://www.rotosound.com/drop_zone.php.
Rotosound, until last year, had soundclips for all of the different sets of strings which was a big help but when I looked now I noticed their website doesn't offer that option anymore. Any of the brands listed can do the job. If you have a moment or two look over your many options and let us know how your choice works out.

Thanks for the suggestions. I want to try flats after some research. I am thinking on the Dadarrio chromes like has been suggested. They can produce more midrange "growl" than regular flats and has the sustain of roundwounds without the finger noise and "zingy" treble sound?
