When buying a new set of headphones, how can you tell if it's NOT going to sound really crappy when using it for playing electric guitar on a guitar amp (Roland Micro Cube) at high gain, high volume, and with effects like distortion, etc? Is there a way to make sure that the sound is not going to crack just by listening without bringing my guitar and amp into the shop? Because I have a set of headphones I got for free from buying a mp3 player long time ago, and it works just fine for listening to music on my Ipod, but when I tried plugging it into my guitar amp and play electric guitar, the sound that came out from the headphones was cracked really badly and all I could hear was a bunch of noise. So how do I avoid from getting this "crappy noise" when buying a new set of headphones? without bringing my guitar and amp to the shop if possible?

Headphone is not the same for MP3 than for hifi or guitar playing.

Often MP3 headphone are cheap.

Your guitar store should suggest good one for you.

You get what you pay for. I use a set of Grado SR-80.

Where's the problem in dragging that small amp to the store to check those headphones directly with that amp?
If it's a good store, they will have demo headphones for testing.

The shop will have headphones, amps, and guitars. You should be set. Also, 9 times out of 10, the headphones in the shop will be of good quality.
