I'm an entertainer. I'm just loud, obnoxious, and fast when I play.

The best are both. And that does not mean "insane technicality and ridiculous stage choreography", it can be three chords, some shouting, and a stage dive. Being a musician is relative, if you can make the sounds you want, you're a musician. Being an entertainer is about projecting an energy, the exact nature of which varies greatly, be it by diving into the crowd, pyrotechnics, etc., or by standing mostly still and strumming that guitar as hard as you can and putting everything you have into the feeling you project. 8)

It's why I love Folk punk... so simple, so rawly emotional, and so moving

i never moved much when playing lead live in pubs and stuff. just not how i roll. im not good enough to wave my guitar round and do big windmills without looking like a nob. i prefer understated to overstated - with the exception of hendrix. watching roger waters live he did a tour with Snowy White and some other prettyboy american guitarist, cant remember his name, but it was ridiculous, something something the 3rd or similar.

this guy had a sharktooth necklace, a one pice crushed velvet catsuit on extravagant facial hair, an upside down, back to front, reverse strung strat, and all the facial expressions you could imagine. he was very very good, but i thought he looked like a pretentious fool.

Snowy White came on next to him wearing some old jeans, a black t shirt and a beige leather jacket. and totally overpowered this other guy. for exmaple i'll take Gilmour over Vai any day of the week.

I think "Artist" is a better word than either.

Actually, that could just make you a player. Or a musical technician..

Now that IS the mark of a musician!

I'm a musician, no doubt about that. If everyone in a band was like me, audiences would be fast asleep by the 2nd number. I hide behind my keyboard rig and don't make any fuss. If I'm playing guitar on a number, then I'm still hiding behind my keyboards..

I meant that even if you have the technical skill of a fruit fly, if you can make it sound how you imagined, you're a musician. Like, a guy never really learned how to play, but playing in a band setting, he want to make feedback and lots of noise. If he can make feedback and lots of noise like he wants, dude's a musician. 8)

We'll agree to disagree. To me a Musician is someone who has a considerable range of skills - often formally acquired, but just as often instinctively realised. The ability to create music, understand it, arrange it for someone else, are all indicators. But mostly importantly the ability to impart emotion into a performance - and having the insight to feel what the writer intended and then moving it on sometimes to a place where your interpretation becomes as valid as the composition. Thats why I so agreed with the other half of your original post..

if it was an option.

Two halves of the same walnut, I'd say. Ideally, anyhow.

You may be in a room by your self playing your music or singing a song. In my book that's entertainment / being an entertainer. 8)
