I like the small ones because they seem to remeber their customers and build a relation ship with them but I like the selection at a big store.

Size doesn't matter, its the quality of the products they carry and how the staff treats their customers. I've been in large and small stores that had great selection and service, and I've been in large and small stores where the selection and/or service left something to be desired.

I wander the big-uns to find and try out what I am looking for.
They don't seem to care what you are doing until they think you are about to buy.

Then I go to my local small shop and get them to bring the item in for me if they don't have it in stock. I find they are excellent on service, good on price and always willing to talk & even jam a bit if things are slow.

Hello Poorboy56,

I go to both but, bowlfreshener nailed it,
"how the staff treats their customers"

Cheers.

I prefer to shop with a local merchant over a national chain. That hasnb't stopped me from spending a few thousand at GC in the past.

Same here. But I've been doing business with a couple of private shops (not chain stores) for well over a decade that give me that attention-AND a 30% discount over MSRP (it ain't just me, they do that for everybody). I have wandered into stores where haggling about ANYTHING that isn't MSRP was a painful and fruitless experience. I usually never went back to them, even to browse.

I'm a big fan of the smaller stores, provided that they are good examples of a small store. I taught for a store that was small and offered very personal service to their customers, even 30 years later I buy most of my gear from them. I taught for another small store that was trying to establish themselves with the guitar trade (they made most of their money repairing band instruments) and they were not my kind of place at all. They wouldn't deal on price, they treated guitarists like illiterate idiots and they simply did not understand that part of the business. They've also been out of business for over 20 years.

The local big chain music store (Tucson) is very decent to do business with and is managed by a fellow that knows his business. I couldn't say a bad thing about them unless I wanted to lie. I use them and recommend them to others because they've earned my business. I can't say the same thing about some of their other locations however.

I've been in small stores that had little--I've been in small stores that had lots without feeling crowded. But I don't like stores that feel crowded--whether big or small.

I like a small to medium store that's organized so there's selection and people who are helpful. It has a community feeling--and if they don't have something, they're not afraid to recommend a place to get it.

I spent a couple of years of my life hanging out at one such store almost weekly--if not more often.

I've spent a whole lot more of my life hanging out in various stores while growing up.

Now I have more responsibilities--so I can't do that as much anymore.

Small to medium. I like the personal feel you get with a smaller store and the advice from musicians who use what is there. Some big stores give me the impression they hire seasoned salesmen and that tends to leave a sour experience.

All we have is a very small store. I went in once and bought some stuff, and the next time I went there a couple months later, several of the staff remembered me. Good business, yet one could get a complex wondering why one is remembered...

Guitar Center is like Wal-Mart, I stay away...I might go there to try out a certain guitar or amp every once in a while. If I like what I see I'll buy it elsewhere. I have had a lot of issues w/ Guitar Centers lack of customer service. I trust my small local store. They know me by name and will give me fair trade in amounts and inexpensive repairs, etc.

'Do not care. In metro Chicago, there is a bunch of everything to keep one's interest. 'Betcha there are a couple hundred all told of all sizes. Heck, there are at least three stores dedicated respectfully to Basses, Drums and Tube Amps.

Heck, where I live there a very few "Little" shops left. I have a GC and a SA near by. Both treat me well. My contact at GC remembers me because I took my son in there and bought 2 guitars, practice amp and some books all in one shot. The guys at SA know me from going in and are always helpfull. Can't really find fault with either chain store. Both have staff that are very helpful.
Funny thing is too, GC and SA are 4 doors away from each other!!! :D
